Suppose the Pennsulvania Railroad had decided to undertake a comprehensive electrification of its main line from Harrisburg west through Pittsburgh all the way to Chicago?
The electrification of the northeast corridor, carried out piecemeal (more or less) during the 1930s with WPA assistance, came after the zenith of PRR steam locomotive technology / before full fruition of diesel long-haul operation. As such, with the birth of the GG1, electrification held decided potential advantages.
So: assuming it played out in 1938 and beyond, with 11000 volt catenary across western PA, OH, IN and into Chicago, whither the PRR through World War II and beyond?
