Suppose L. Neil Smith's alternate version of the Declaration of Independence had occurred. What would have REALLY happened?

The Brits would have happily reconquered the bulk of the states within the next decade or two, as things collapsed. Smith writes an entertaining story, but what he understands about politics and history could easily be encompassed by the 15th letter of the alphabet
