The alternate history challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to have Israel established somewhere else instead of the Middle East.

The Land of Israel is, as far as I understand it being non-Jewish, a concept going far beyond a name on a map. The Jewish Promised Land is exactly where it is for historical reasons going back thousands of years. The very name "Israel" is biblical, and the connotations for what the idea of the land of Israel means to the Jewish people are similarly historic. If you are talking about a safe zone for European Jews after WWII then that's one thing, but it would only ever be seen as a temporary home with the ultimate aim being to re-establish Israel in the historic land of Israel. If some sort of Jewish state was set up in Madagascar or East Prussia or wherever it still wouldn't be Israel, and the new arrivees would still be saying "next year in Jerusalem", not "let's stay here in Antananarivo".

ASB after 1900, in my opinion. Palestine was what Ben Gurion and Company wanted. Ho Chi Minh actually offered them a place in Vietnam, but he said no.

To butterfly or alter the direction of Zionism, we will need an earlier POD.

We had a similar discussion in another thread and some of us concluded that Schleswig-Holstein might have been a good choice. The nazis had they strongest base in the east, but those areas ended up under Soviet domination, so a Jewish state here would probably not be very popular among the Jews. Still, it could be argued that it would be fair to place the new state in area where a large part of the population was to blame for the nazi period and its atrocities. As this map shows, Schleswig-Holstein was one of the areas in West Germany where the nazis were strongest: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germa...rch_1933#mediaviewer/File:NSDAP_Wahl_1933.png

Schleswig-Holstein also had the advantage that it had access to the sea.
