Lincoln beats Douglas 1858

A factor in Lincoln's nomination was his running Senator Douglas close for reelection in 1858. (I think some sources credit him with more of the popular vote it being an election for the Legislature.)

If Lincoln had actually won the Senate seat, I am guessing that it would mean that Douglas was not a credible candidate. Would another Democrat have done better or worse against Lincoln and in terms of holding together the party?

Could Republicans have lost in 1860?
