I used the Select By Color tool on the ocean, filled it in with the single ocean color (using the "fill whole selection" option on the Bucket Fill tool), then did the same for the polar ice; then I shift-clicked to select both the polar ice and the ocean, and inversed the selection, thus making me select all the area I hadn't filled in (i.e. the land and a few pixels that weren't caught by the select-by-color tool as being ocean or polar ice; the latter is part of why it needs cleanup, and why there are so many random one-or-two-pixel islands). With only the pixels that bordered the land now selected, I filled with black to create the coastlines.

Hm... I may have to start giving GIMP a try. Right now I'm really digging Paint.NET, as it seems less complex.
Problem with GIMP is it loads up really slow for me, and if I touch the loading screen it freezes and crashes the program.

So... this might be a leap of a request here, but can someone put this map of Westeros, Essos, and the bit of Sothoryos onto this basemap projection and resize?

I guess the catch would be to assume that the fantasy projection is Mercator, so the challenge is to map distort it. GRRM says that Westeros is about equal to South America. Which puts the Wall around Iceland, Dorne near the Sahara, and Old Valyria just south of India (I'm eyeballing it). As for longitude, let's say the cartographers are in Oldtown, so they use that as the Prime Meridian.

Here's a map generated on the assumption that Westeros's latitudes are comparable to South America's (except hemisphere swapped, of course).

However, I think the climate of the Stormlands/The Reach/Dorne hint that it's farther north rather than on the equator (the same for the Red Waste). Say try with Valyria on the equator, putting Dorne more around the Caribbean?

It shrunk, Westeros is about 2/3 the original size. Maybe keep it ~80% original size, and push as far north as it will let Dorne stay north of the equator. I feel like the Lands of Always Winter don't have to worry too much about an abnormal climate up there.

Was trying to come up with something neither Austrian nor Hungarian national and went:

1) the People are now the Monarchy - so appropriate the Habsburg colours
2) it's marxist so cog wheel fits
3) it's missing something - red star works
4) fimbriate in white so colours don't clash
