To counterbalance the Ameriwanking. (after many an attempt over the last few days to make a half-way decent map)

Article 2 of the Treaty of Paris, 1783:
And that all disputes which might arise in future on the subject of the boundaries of the said United States may be prevented, it is hereby agreed and declared, that the following are and shall be their boundaries: following the middle of river Penobscot to its ultimate source in the highlands; thence along the said highlands which divide those rivers that empty themselves into the river St. Lawrence, from those which fall into the Atlantic Ocean, to the northernmost head of river Connecticut; thence follows the middle of said river to the northern line of latitude that passes two miles north of Ticonderoga; thence follows said line of latitude due west until reaching Lake Ontario; thence through the midpoint of the lake to the water communication with Lake Erie; thence through the middle of said communication to Lake Erie; thence through the midpoint of said Lake southward of Pelee Island to the mouth of the Great Miami river; thence up the middle of said river to its source; thence in a straight line due southwest to the river Wabash; thence down the middle of said river until its confluence with the river White; thence in a line due west until it meets the river Mississippi; thence..."

And so formed the boundary between the newly-independent United States of America with the colonies and protectorates of His Majesty the King to her north.

Realistically, local guerillas and widespread opposition should make that area administration hell for the Japanese. And I just noticed that a big chunk of the Caspian Sea appears to be missing, but that could just be the basemap.

The map's great, and the scenario is intriguing; completely alternate USs are highly interesting. One thing that occurs to me is that since the northern states lost more land than the southern ones, they're going to be more bitter about the whole ordeal. We might see stronger New England and/or New York separatism here.

Pretty cool. Do you have a link to that 'wood cut' I can look at? I can't quite make out the detail. Is it a Tarot card or something?

Edit: Never mind, I found it.

How could all those northern provinces have enough people?

And what's the territory between Ontario and that province to the north of it?

There's a lot more people, and also US relations aren't exactly rosey (though the rest of the world has issues so people still immigrating, including lots of Americans).

But why would they move to places so far north?

Oh. The fact that it was a territory color confused me. I had a brainfart and temporarily forgot that's where Ottawa was .

Mining jobs are important. Then communities built around those mining jobs, that grow by inertia.

That's what makes the Canadian Shield so glorious. They won't be running out any time soon. And those ones that do run out have road systems that keep them from shrinking too badly and they get some nice goverment research stations far from easy American or Soviet spying.
