Btw, there is always the option of having an astronaut who died live and become a ATL president. I plan on doing that for one of my TL ideas.

Probably best for his legacy if he avoids politics. Last time he made a political statement, it was in support of a candidate who felt herself compelled to publicly deny being a witch.

Now this would have been understandable in the alderman elections back in Puritan New England, but in 2010...

In the mid-80's he gets a high ranking post at the Strategic Defense Initiative. Then, at Bush National Space Council (1989) chaired by VP Dan Quayle. Perhaps Lawrence can switch to politics in the early 90's, and became the Republican party own Obama...

Jim Lovell was President (of the National Eagle Scout Association) but in 1995 after a successful Naval and Business career his profile was given a huge boost with the release of the movie "Apollo 13" so it could be possible that say the Democrats asked him to for the Congress or Senate against a long serving incumbent and he wins. Come 2000 after winning the seat again Al Gore ask hime to run as his Vice President and this pushes him over the line to win against George W Bush.
