Portal to Fantasy world in Japan

Manga Name: GATE - THUS THE JSDF FOUGHT THERE

I thought it is pretty interesting, but it seems modern weaponry is way over powering, and the enemies don't have anything other then mystical creatures on their side to balance things out.

The politics also has a subplot. The Chinese, Japanese, and Americans all attempt to control the lands across the portal.

Well modern weaponry is overpowering in real life. Think of the difference in power between a spear thrust and a handgun.
However authors rarely play that straight and if there is any fantasy/modern world crossover it always turns out that the fantasy people have some sort of permanent "Protection against all forms of modern warfare" spell on them.

Still, I should check it out.

Yeah, turns out they can slaughter wyverns easily, yet the bigger dragons can withstand concentrated fire, though a simple rpg can blow its leg off.
The political subplot is more interesting. (although not translated).

I think I read about this on Space Battles. It's based on a book series which was based on a series of posts on some online forum.

Well, after reading it. My verdict is that while this story does have a lot of potential to be good, it does have potential to fail as well.

I heard that the author included right wing stuff in the original work and while they were toned down or removed when the light novel was published. We might have to prepare ourselves for some good old japanese jingoism.
