Very good point. You'd have to suspect that the backlash against genetic engineering etc described in DS9 was only the half of it. Not a good time to be a child prodigy... Of course, it'd take different forms in different parts of the world, but you can imagine it getting seriously nasty in some places.

It's easy to see how WW3 might have grown inevitably out of the aftermath of the Eugenics Wars, in the same sort of way that WW2 was a knock-on from WW1.

THE IOC ITSELF WAS OFFICIALLY DISBANDED TWO WEEKS AFTER THE DISSOLUTION OF THE UN AND UNTIL THE FORMATION OF THE LONDON COMMITTEE NO BODY HAD EMERGED WILLING TO TAKE ON THE CHALLENGE OF REVIVING THE GAMES.

THE PLAN TO REVIVE THE GAMES WAS PROPOSED TO COMMEMORATE THE 1948 LONDON GAMES WHICH ALSO REIGNITED A MORIBUND OLYMPIC MOVEMENT AFTER A LONG AND BITTER WAR. THE 1948 GAMES FACED SEVERE PROBLEMS IN A BRITAIN STILL FACING RATIONING AND AUSTERITY. THE 2008 PLAN IRONICALLY HAD FEW PROBLEMS FINDING FUNDING, THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT WAS KEEN TO REBUILD THE DEVASTATED AREA AROUND CANARY WHARF AND WAS WILLING TO FUND THE COSTS. THE PROBLEMS WHICH PROVED INSURMOUNTABLE WERE STRAINED INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS AND A SURPRISINGLY HOSTILE PUBLIC.

LOCOG MADE IT CLEAR IT WANTED A TRULY GLOBAL GAMES BUT AS LITTLE AS A MONTH AFTER THE ORIGINAL 2005 ANNOUNCEMENT THE USA MADE IT CLEAR THAT IT WOULD NOT TAKE PART IF ANY OF THE FORMER KHANATE NATIONS WERE INVITED TO PARTICIPATE. DESPITE EXTENSIVE DIPLOMATIC EFFORTS NEITHER THE US NOR A NUMBER OF OTHER ALLIANCE NATIONS WOULD BUDGE. THE ANNOUNCEMENT IN 2006 THAT INDIA AND CHINA WERE LOOKING TO FORM A NEW POLITICAL BLOC IN ASIA SIMPLY HARDENED ATTITUDES.

THE ATTITUDE OF MANY ORDINARY CITIZENS TOOK THE OLDER GENERATION WHO MADE UP LOCOG BY SURPRISE. TO MANY OF THOSE WHO GREW UP DURING THE WAR THE OLYMPIC MOTTO; 'FASTER HIGHER, STRONGER', SOUNDED MORE LIKE AUGMENT PROPAGANDA.

WHILE HOSTILITY IN THE UK WAS LIMITED TO ANTI-OLYMPIC ADVERTISING CAMPAIGNS AND DEMONSTRATIONS IT TOOK MORE SINISTER FORMS IN OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD. THE ATTACK ON AN ATHLETICS TRAINING CAMP IN JAMAICA TWO MONTHS AGO IS SAID TO HAVE HORRIFIED LOCOG MEMBERS; ESPECIALLY THE DEATH OF PROMISING SPRINTER USAIN BOLT WHO HAD BEEN THE POSTER BOY FOR THE JAMAICAN OLYMPIC COMMITTEE, WHICH WAS IMMEDIATELY DISBANDED.

As you can see I did indeed imagine. And you can see how this might lead into the death of professional sports like baseball in the ST universe.

On the other hand, good news for truly unremarkable characters (in every way) who want to run for elected office - I imagine that the sort of vaguely youngish, fit-ish, full-head-of-hair-possessing identikit characters who seem most electable (in Britain anyway) in the 2000s will seem a bit too...Augmentish to the guy in the street. Especially if they come across as *gasp* a bit clever.

So the West spend the next few decades racing each other to the bottom, while the newly-minted Eastern Coalition mutter "Khan lives!" to each other behind closed doors as they gird their loins for Round Two...

I like the idea that the Optimum Movement/ Eastern Coalition rises from the ashes of the Great Khanate. What makes this new group more insidious is that it also has members from nations-like Australia- that were attacked or conquered by the Great Khanate. This would prove what many had suspected that the ideology of the Augments did take root to a certain extent.

When you look at major events in history, WWI is a good example, you'll see several different schools of historians with different interpretations of causes and effects. Wouldn't be surprising if there isn't a body of historians trying to push the idea that the two are essentially one conflict, and doubtless others arguing the exact opposite.

Which as has been suggested explains tragic mistakes like the Sanctuary Districts. It is a bit odd that you can easily work the DS9 material into an overt EW while Voyager went out of its way to rule it out but I don't for one minute buy 'Future's End' as remotely credible.

Regarding 'Future's End' i go for the theory that Stirling (episode villain) has changed enough of history that the Eugenic War are ereased or happened in a different way (maybe this time are covert)...otherwise don't make any sense, Time Travel give you only headhance

For many years following the end of the Eugenics Wars, one of the great unanswered questions facing historians of the conflict surrounded its origins. How did eugenically-augmented “supermen” come to be positioned to seize political and military power in more than forty, mostly developing, Earth nations, many with no historical involvement or infrastructure base in the fields of genetic engineering? The destruction of most of the official archives of the Great Khanate nations, either in nuclear attacks or conventional fighting, or at the hands of GK loyalists themselves as defeat became inevitable, did not make this task of understanding any easier.

One thing became increasingly clear with the passing of time; the role of the 20th century Earth empire known as the Soviet Union in the rise of eugenic rule throughout what was often known as the “Third World” could not be underestimated. It is known now that scientists of another polity of the era, the infamous Nazi German Reich, many with close connections to the burgeoning international eugenics movement, made the initial breakthroughs in the field of augmentation during the last years of the Second Earth World War. It is also clear that much of that research was seized by Soviet forces picking over the ruins of the Nazi Reich and returned with them to their homeland.

For years, these stolen materials remained sealed in closed archives, for while the Soviet emperor Stalin’s favourite biologist Trofim Lysenko held sway over Soviet science all study of Mendelian genetics was regarded as politically unacceptable (much as it later became throughout much of Earth following the end of the Eugenics Wars). However, following Stalin’s death in 1953 and during Lysenko’s gradual fall from grace over the course of the next decade, Soviet genetic scientists quickly began to make up lost ground, recreating and quickly surpassing the earlier Nazi experiments. Their goal was a simple one: to breed a new race of Soviet super-soldiers to compete with what was believed must by now be the Western Earth nations’ advanced lead in the field.

During the course of the 1960s and 70s, as part of what came to be known as the Cold War, the Soviets and their rival empire, the United States of America, fought proxy conflicts in the various corners of the developing world, both flooding these already unstable regions with vast quantities of weaponry and military support for their own favoured factions. The Soviets, however (for unknown to them at first, the United States military had never shown a particular interest in eugenics or military augmentation) had a unique commodity with which to supply their most trusted “Third World” allies. Not only could the Soviets provide such contemporary items of military hardware as tanks, aircraft, missiles and small arms; they could also provide the seeds of future eugenic armies in the form of shipments of very special children…

In truth I think that Futures End-like some other Trek canon- just had some sloppy writing regarding its apparent omission of the Eugenics Wars.

CROSSING THE TURKISH BORDER HAD BEEN SURPRISINGLY EASY, THE REGION WAS RIDDLED WITH SMUGGLERS ROUTES AND RIGM BORDER FORCES SEEMED TO HAVE NOTHING BUT CONTEMPT FOR THE LOCALS AND LARGELY IGNORE THEIR ACTIVITIES.

THE VILLAGE WE VISITED MADE IT CLEAR THAT NOT ALL RIGM FORCES WERE SO DISINTERESTED. IN EVERY HOME WE VISITED WE FOUND FOOD CLOTHING AND VALUABLES SIMPLY LEFT WHERE THEY HAD LAIN AND NOT ONE LIVING SOUL ANYWHERE IN THE VILLAGE, ALL OF WHICH SERVES TO CORROBORATE THE STORY AZIZ SHARED WITH ME.

FOR THE SAFETY OF AZIZ AND THOSE PROTECTING HIM I CAN REVEAL NOTHING ABOUT WHERE WE MET BUT HIS STORY WAS COMPELLING AND APPALLING IN EQUAL MEASURES.

HIS ACCOUNT BEGAN WITH A VISIT TO HIS VILLAGE BY A GROUP OF MDEICS FROM THE RED CRESCENT(IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT THE ORGANIZATION WITHDREW FROM IRAN IN 1992 AFTER THE EXECUTION OF A NUMBER OF THEIR VOLUNTEERS) THEY CLAIMED THAT THEY WERE TRACKING THE PROGRESS OF A DISEASE OUTBREAK IN THE REGION. THEY TOOK BLOOD SAMPLES AND AT THE SAME TIME CARRIED OUT MEDICAL PROCEDURES AND LEFT BEHIND MEDICINES AND FOOD RATIONS WHEN THEY LEFT.

THREE NIGHTS LATER THERE WAS ANOTHER GROUP OF VISITORS, RIGM SOLDIERS. THEY ARRIVED IN HELICOPTERS AND SWARMED ALL OVER THE VILLAGE ROUNDING UP EVERYONE. ONCE THEY HAD EVERYONE ASSEMBLED THEY BEGAN SEPARATING PEOPLE OUT; A GROUP OF CHILDREN AND PREGNANT WOMEN WERE ESCORTED TO THE HELICOPTERS. WHEN THE VILLAGE ELDERS PROTESTED THEY WERE GUNNED DOWN WHERE THEY STOOD.

IN THE CONFUSION THIS CREATED AZIZ SLIPPED AWAY FROM THE VILLAGE AND ONLY SAW WHAT HAPPENED NEXT FROM A DISTANCE. THE HELICOPTERS DEPARTED WITH THEIR SELECTED CAPTIVES AND A FEW MINUTES LATER WHILE THE VILLAGE WAS STILL IN TURMOIL AZIZ HEARD JETS PASSING OVER THE VILLAGE AT HIGH SPEED. AFTER THAT HE HEARD SCREAMING AND CURSING THAT DIED OUT INTO COMPLETE SILENCE.

THE NEXT MORNING HE CREPT CLOSE TO THE VILLAGE AND SAW MEN IN PROTECTIVE CLOTHING LOADING BODIES ONTO TRUCKS, WHICH WAS WHEN AZIZ RAN INTO THE HILLS AND EVENTUALLY ENCOUNTERED THE GROUP THAT GAVE HIM SHELTER. WHILE ALL THE DETAILS OF HIS STORY CANNOT BE CONFIRMED THEY FIT IN WITH A PATTERN OF REPORTS COMING OUT OF THE REGION. WHOLESALE MASSACRES BEING CARRIED OUT WITH A FEW BEING SPARED TO BE USED IN SOME SORT OF BREEDING PROGRAM. THIS RAISES SERIOUS QUESTIONS AS TO HOW WESTERN NATIONS CAN HOPE TO REACH A DIPLOMATIC SOLUTION WHEN THE KHANATE APPEARS TO CONDONE SUCH ACTIVITIES.

USA TODAY APPROACHED THE STATE DEPARTMENT FOR COMMENT BUT THEY DECLINED TO MAKE A STATEMENT.
