Not sure if this is the right thread as this isn't exactly a blank map but oh well.

Not mine, it's the times but I downloaded it off of the Library of Congress resource website and converted it from that horrible format they use into a PNG. The file is quite large, so large I can't upload it on the internet, but rather post the download link to the png file.

The map is intended to be a general guide to the major tribal and ethnic groupings of Africa prior to European contact.

Here is a preview of it:

Download link.

Thanks. That's going to be very useful for a lot of mapmakers.

I'm trying to blank out the colors and make it more editable but it's such a big file it's freezing Paint.NET!

Hmm, didn't think of that map's potential as a blank map. I'm glad it's already finding use.

Oh and yah, it's a pretty huge map. It was scrolling and zooming fine on paint.net for me though.

Scrolling and zooming is fine; it's converting the yellows to white all in one move that is crashing it for me.

Do th old 'copy a section to a new file and edit then move back' technique.

As slow as that is I can just use the recolor tool set to 500 pixels (which barely touches that map) if I'm gonna do that.

No patience, I'm afraid.

The title of the map is actually "tribes, peoples and nations of modern Africa" (emphasis mine). From all appearances, it isn't meant to show precolonial ethnic distributions; instead, it shows the approximate distributions in 1972 when the map was published.

It isn't a bad reference map for a late precolonial timeline or story (say, 1850 to 1900). The further back you go, even in relatively recent history, the more effect folk-migrations have - for instance, the Mfecane radically changed the map of southern Africa; the Fang only got to Gabon and Equatorial Guinea during the early nineteenth century; and several empires rose and fell in the Sahel during the 1700s and 1800s. The best way to use the map would probably be to look at the area where you want to set your story, see what ethnic groups were there in 1972, and then research the history of those groups to see where they were at the time you want to write about.

maybe it's gotten lost in here, but does anyone have a map of Mexican subdivisions in the same vein as the US County map on the first page?

Anyone knows if there's a blank map of westeros and essos in the same projection as the base maps we use in AH.com?

A blank world map, with the whole Pacific Ocean on it.
Unfortunately with a messed up projection...

I've been considering a basemap with the Pacific Ocean centered instead of Europe/Africa. Don't exactly know how I'd go about doing it, though, and Europe would be a mess.

Is there a map of the world in 1951, with rivers shown?

Not that I have seen. I have one in Worlda of 1950 that needs work, and has no rivers, but I also have a rivers map you could probably overlay without too much trouble.
