How about the former? Although I'd be intrigued to hear about the Cold War in your TL also.

Viridian* Governor Wahid bin el-Reshid of California, on America.

"America is a lovely land, one that offers great things for anybody. My own parents left Arabia for California because California offered more for them. America offers the dream, the opportunity to elevate yourself to great prestige, while ensuring it helps you in a number of different ways. America is the Cradle of Socialism, one of our great presidents, Abraham Lincoln, created Socialism and this developed itself barely a few years later into a full party, the Union Labor Party."

"It saddens me that the Republicans, the party of Lincoln and Reed, of Fairbanks and Hughes, went down the hard-right route. Reagan rode on the height of pro-Crystalist feelings in the USA. If he had won, why, terrible things would have happened! I'm glad that they have re-taken some of their progressive roots back, now."

"The reason I'm a Viridian? The Democratic Party's centrism, for me, is worrying, because I believe that history is important to politics, and never mind how much they talk about their changes, which I believe are sincere, I cannot be honest with myself if I was a member of a party that switched ideology so abrupt, from right-wing to left-wing. I know that it came from the Progressives moving there, but the fact that the party just.... No guarantee they will not switch back."

"The reason I'm supporting Kent Mesplay in 2016? He represents real change and he promises to have a stronger foreign policy. Too long have America stood aside and watched horrors ensure. Gore, Kerry and Obama had a soft foreign policy. Mesplay will not have that. He will have my vote and support come the election."

*Viridian means a member of the Green Party. Its the Democrat analogue to Democratic.

I don't think McKinley is a good example of the party's more liberal early days.

Really? It was 150 years ago. Would a modern-day governor who wants to be reelected actually make this argument in your TL?

I like the word Viridian, as it's the name of one of my favorite gun laser manufacturers.

Yeah, that's one hell of a shaky reason, bordering on ad hominem.

Not a good choice, really.

And, he don't want to be re-elected. Fair point, I'll change it to something else.

Disagreeing with their tendency to switch directions is a much more likely reason for a politician to cite than the slavery thing. May still be a logical fallacy, but one that I can see in a speech nonetheless.

Agreed.

I'm kind of stuck right now, can't really think of what to write. Don't worry, it's just a little block, I'll come back with a breakthough pretty soon, I've got a feeling.

Maybe you can work on Agricola's Folly in the meantime...

Yeah, I can. I'll give Agricola another update tomorrow, and see if that gets me in a writing mood, okay?

The Fifteen Founders of Socialism

The Big Three

1) Abraham Lincoln (USA)
Honest Abe himself.
2) John Wilkes Booth (USA) The silent, thinking, type.
3) Archibald Primrose (GB) The aristocrat turned proletariat

The Others

1) John Sparrow David Thompson (Canada) The Maple Leaf is red...
2) Elisabeth Dmitrieff (France) Socialism transcends gender.
3) Pedro Lascuráin (Mexico) Mexico's future longest-serving president
4) Aleksandr Ulyanov (Russia) Brother to the failed revolutionary.
5) Karl Marx (Germany) Irrelevant. Didn't do anything important.
6) Frederich Engels (Germany)
Irrelevant as well.
7) James Keir Hardie (GB) Democratic Socialist standard-bearer.
8) John Redmond (Ireland) The most soft-spoken of them all.
9) Edward Kelly (Australia) The most outspoken of them all.
10) Meri Te Tai Mangakahia (Nouvelle-Zelande) Socialism spreads everywhere, even Nouvelle-Zelande
11) Kuang Min (China) The Land of the Dragon have Reds as well...
12) Alfred Nobel (Sweden) The elder statesman of the group.
OK. You might be wondering "How does a Maori, a female one even, get in..." The conventions they met at, they were all united by their Socialist ideology, so natural prejudices was kept quiet, especially as Liberals and Conservatives at that time was suspicious of them. This is not like OTL, but far more inclusive and progressive.
