One of the more peculiar consequences of cheapened spacefaring technology was that weirdos could claim any bit of rock as their own nation. One of the earliest was the Kingdom of Sol, founded when insane billionaire Gustav Searle occupied a derelict space station in orbit around the Sun and declared himself king of the main-sequence star.

As there was no legal basis against nations like this, the Kingdom of Sol had a bit more success than micronations like Sealand. Though most countries still refused to take it seriously. After being refused a seat in the UN General Assembly, King Searle threatened to shut off the Sun.

The space station, and Searle, were burned up by a solar flare in 2075. As he was the only citizen of the country, the Kingdom of Sol is considered to have ceased to exist after that.

I think many people share that sentiment.

And I've always thought it was rather contrived how Pinbacker survived for so long aboard such a ridiculously derelict ship.

Wasn't the derelict's greenhouse more than fully functional, though?

To celebrate the landing of the "Curiosity" Mars Science Laboratory rover on Mars tomorrow, here is a flag of Mars.

Fingers crossed that the "seven minutes of hell" will end with success.

If by "fully functional" you mean "growing wildly enough produce for a human to survive off", then yeah.

I have a little challenge for all the bored flagmakers:

It is 1996-1997. Chip the ASB overhears that Bosnia and Herzegovina, after all the suffering and problems it experienced during the war, is supposed to get a new flag. It has been argued that the one it used in 1992-1995, prior to the Dayton agreement, reflects Bosnian history and identity from a purely Bosnian (Muslim) POV and doesn't factor in the Croats and Serbs of the country. Carlos Westendorp is supposed to design the new flag, but Chip reads his mind and doesn't like the design. (This is the design that will eventually get adopted in 1998 and become the current flag of Bosnia.) Chip gets an idea. He travels to the present, kidnaps AH.commers and brings them temporarily back to the late 90s. He brainwashes the international community into accepting one of the new flags for Bosnia created by the board's members.

Challenge: With the added baggage of historical hindsight, your objective is to create a new flag for Bosnia and Herzegovina. The flag should:
1.) reflect the history of the country (e.g. its medieval independence, etc.)
2.) equally represent all the three main nationalities (Bosnians, Serbs and Croats).
Don't be affraid of originality, but try to balance it with the vexilological tradition of the region and with the two main goals above. And, unlike in OTL, avoid the temptation of adding bland "united Europe"-style iconography to the flag.

I actually have a few "new" Bosnian Flags from my photobucket album!

I did make a few "New Bosnian" Flags that don't reflect any of the 1998 "European" one. Do you like any of these?

(pay no attention to the top flag)

The third one is by far the most interesting. But I think all of them could use some work. And try to make a flag without the coat of arms.

Flag for Sudetenland in my timeline:

The colours black white stands for the Order of the teutonic knights, and should symbolize the german colonization of the east.

Inspired by Brdman's third flag/coat of arms...

Not entirely happy with it, since I find it hard to integrate the fleur-de-lis (since you asked for a representatation of Bosnia's history, Petike).

I always liked the triangle symbolism in the Bosnian flag, so here's this:

Edit: Unfortunate post timing...
