I found a map that seems to claim it was supposed to be like that in OTL at some point.

Nope, those are Imperial Provinces, from Maximillian's schemes.

Got it.
That one made up of OTL NW Sonora would be particularly sparsely inhabited.

It involves the US having rather more of a falling out with the UK and France than OTL. I'm thinking that the *Trent Affair ends up on a French ship and Nappy III is a bit more enthusiastic about his 'honour' than the British were. The French recognise the CSA and loan it money, and also get more involved in Mexico than OTL. The British decide to sell the CSA some supplies for quick cash too, and the USA still wins but holds a grudge.

So a lot of the same OTL events (in the beginning anyway) but different attitudes towards such, with butterflies running their course?

Yeah, attitudes and slightly different demographics, but until about WWI the overriding pattern is about the same.

Did something like the Alabama Claims controversy happen ITTL? What with the British selling the Confederates arms more openly, I could see it being even more disastrous for the British.

Yes, sort of like that, but the Americans were even angrier so demanded even more (the All of Canada or 2 Billion Dollars like that one guy would after is about in line) and the British got defensive about it, and so it added on an angry note, the British grudgingly paying a bit more than OTL, but the Americans being angry that it wasn't enough.

I could see Sumner and Seward being more aggressive toward the British ITTL, definitely. The British, I think, would also be less willing to just pay and be done with it, since the Confederacy wasn't completely unrecognised, and so it can't be seen to the same extent as 'selling arms to rebels'. The result would likely be the same as OTL, but with harder feelings, and there'd probably be less of a rapprochement between the US and the British ITTL.
