The Most Serene Republic of Upper and Lower Benswana is a large, environmentally stunning nation, renowned for its compulsory military service. Its compassionate population of 93 million are fiercely patriotic and enjoy great social equality; they tend to view other, more capitalist countries as somewhat immoral and corrupt.
The large, socially-minded government juggles the competing demands of Education, Commerce, and Social Equality. The average income tax rate is 30%, but much higher for the wealthy. A healthy private sector is led by the Soda Sales, Arms Manufacturing, and Tourism industries.
There has been a series of riots between local cannibals and health food advocates, anti-government web sites are springing up, record sales of 'child-whacking sticks' have been reported, and almost all of Upper and Lower Benswana's water is piped into the country from abroad for exorbitant prices. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown. Upper and Lower Benswana's national animal is the Flamingo, which is also the nation's favorite main course, and its currency is the Buck.
Upper and Lower Benswana is ranked 1st in Mountainous Coastal Freedom Plaza and 51,611th in the world for Most Extreme, scoring 17 on the Paul-Nader Subjective Decentrality Index.

Well, one result of the 'big upgrade,' we all became homos
J put his large arm around Luc and grunted suggestively
Cut it out, Luc laughed. We learned what 'homo' means. You got promoted as a species, you, the chimps, and, I presume, the baboons, too?
Bill snorted and grinned to indicate an inside joke that might be revealed.
Baboons, he said. Man, I don't know.
J playfully squeezed Luc's head and then reached for a grapefruit.
You see, chimps and of course gorillas are, indubitably great apes.
Yes, hear hear
Baboons?
Hm.
Baboons?
Mm. Not.
Not that great.
Howling pains in the ass, to be frank.
Not in a bad way. I'm just saying.
You notice there aren't any on the detail, eh? That is not, my dear sir, what we call coincidence.
Just not into that obedience and following direction thing.
Though the more social ones make decent bartenders. Oh yes, and Marines!
Yes, thank heavens.
Luc wondered aloud why that was.
Well, look at them.
Yeah.
They know they are not attractive creatures. It gets to them.
You know, some of them are hairdressers?
Bill laughed out loud.
Luc smiled. He was getting better at detecting when his leg was being pulled.

The Most Serene Republic of Upper and Lower Benswana is a very large, genial nation, remarkable for its compulsory military service. Its compassionate population of 195 million are fiercely patriotic and enjoy great social equality; they tend to view other, more capitalist countries as somewhat immoral and corrupt.
The enormous, socially-minded government juggles the competing demands of Healthcare, Commerce, and Education. The average income tax rate is 32%, but much higher for the wealthy. The private sector is almost wholly made up of enterprising ten-year-olds selling lemonade on the sidewalk, although the government is looking at stamping this out.
Almost all of Upper and Lower Benswana's water is piped into the country from abroad for exorbitant prices, a niche industry catering to S&M enthusiasts has sprung up, the government is financing an extremely costly war against malaria, and Upper and Lower Benswana's soft-touch approach to diplomacy has made it known as the 'push-over' of the region. Pete didn't hate Sherry Robinson. He made sure Abs didn't hate her either.
Pete had felt his friend begin to react when they walked past what must have been the fifth person in several minutes to have a laminated picture of the dead lawyer on the lapel of their jacket on a busy Manhattan sidewalk.

Pete reached over to Abs's upper arm and pinched, hard.

Abs caught himself about to react to the pain and stilled his reaction.
Pete looked at Abs and held back from smiling.

He knew they could count on each other to stay focused. They each knew they weren't done and needed to be very, very aware of themselves and their surroundings if anything else was going to be successfully planned and done.

Maybe Carson was on the bus as a driver's aide?

Potentially blasphemous "what if" follows, which has zero whatsoever to do with the timeline we are reading and enjoying, just a fantasy...

Inside the bus, from the front seat by the driver, the Special Volunteer stood up and frowned on hearing the commotion.

"Hold on here," he said with uncharacteristic flatness.

He advanced to the bus entrance and held his hand up to halt Chip's grandparents.

It was understood that this volunteer had leeway. His stature and the growing esteem developed for his repeatedly proven judgment would give wielders of authority pause where common sense did not rise up to the occasion.

The volunteer made eye contact with Chip's grandparents and with a gesture directed them back off the bus. The staff herding them onto the bus were still scowling, but they physically backed away, at least one breathing somewhat heavily.

The persons herding Chip away paused and looked back to the change of sound and vibe behind them. The Volunteer pointed at them and whistled sharply.

"Kid," he called out. "Young man, please, come here."

He stood now between the approaching Chip and Chip's grandparents.

The volunteer sternly kept the lump in his throat from taking control.

After a moment, he spoke softly and calmly.

"Young man," he said to Chip. "Get yourself together and give your grandparents a hug."

From the huddle of Chip and his grandparents, there were whispers and choked sobs. The volunteer stood to the side, overseeing the huddle and the space around it. The volunteer knew that the kid and his grandparents would most likely know to let go in a couple minutes... and they did.

The grandparents turned and helped each other up into the bus.

Chip stood, raised his hand to wave and then lowered it.

The volunteer placed his arm around Chip and gave words of encouragement, leading him away.

The volunteer gave Chip's shoulder a firm squeeze.

"It's in G-d's hands now," he told him.

And since it didn't happen like that, just as Rorschach didn't drive Oz head-first into the ice, James Bond's wife did not survive Blofeld's bullets, and the Belgians did wreck the Congo, Chip still has that experience weighing his conscience down. It's going to be sad when Chip tells his parents.
