Satanism

I was wondering what the most plausable POD would be to have full blown Satanism/Devil Worship be a decent sized world religion in 2006, My best guess would be a POD sometime in the crusades, but I was wondering if anybody had some other thoughts........

And what do you mean exactly by Satanism? Because that can means many 'spirituality'... The worship of the dark being, or a sort of gnostism against a 'false' god, by example.

In one sense its just a counterpart to Christianity, or more perhaps more correctly Judeo-Christianity. There are alot of other factors and beliefs rolled up into the contemporary idea of Satanism which don't really belong there so we have to be careful of that. The Templars weren't Satan worshippers but they were labelled as such by the Church in a means to wipe them out and the same could be said for the Cathers.

Why not have Satanic Templars? You could have them forced to flee so they go to south africa and found a Satanic Domination..

How about a twisted Gnostism? They worship the 'horned' Demiurge and hound the folowers of the other god, the 'evil' Supreme Creator?

I don't think a religion that defines itself in opposition to Christianity can hope to become more than a small, subversive group of rebels without a cause. Even modern Satanism operates on a broader base than that. As long as you define yourself agaionst the mainstream God, you are also opposing mainstream values, and that's no recipe for success. You need to appropriate some and create an opposed value system that is attractive. And then you are more than just anti-Christianity.

Of course Christians may fail to see that and regard such a fdaith as essentially 'satanic'. After all, leading theologians pretty much regarded Islam as a personal poffense against Jesus Christ for the first few centuries. A Gnostic faith that regarded God as the evil creator would be *very* easy to misunderstand.
