Daniel Boone POD

Just saw a HISTORY CHANNEL documentary on Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett today, which leads me to pose this AH question: WI Boone, during his fur-trade forays into Kentucky, had been killed by either the Shawnee or Cherokee who captured him during the early 1770s, instead of OTL being deprived of all his furs and sent back home on pain of death ? Would the frontiersman legend of America still have developed with another larger-than-life figure being found for the likes of James Fennimore Cooper to idolise for nationalistic purposes, or would the absence of Boone from the scene have inhibited the rise of the frontiersman until Crockett came along ?
