Ehtnic Map Colors

Ok, so I went to start working on a map showing the different ethnic groups in a country, and this got me to thinking, what's the best way to assign a color to an ethnic group?

I mean if you do the super simple 'Black, White, Latino, East Asian, South Asian, Aborignal' it's easy, but when you actually start doing different ethnic groups, particularly related ones, not so much.

Specifically which ones? Croats in Austria-Hungary or Italians in New York City -- for example.

You would need to have a picture of every house in the world, and assign each and everyone an ethic color or blend of colors. That would be nearly impossible.

Well I'm working with only a few primary groups and a few minor ones, enough to be able to create colors for, I was just thinking in general though.

Almost every ethnicity has a flag of some sort or an emblem. Just pick a color that really pops from those symbols. That's what I would do.

I'd start by assigning distinct colors to each of the six main groups you listed, and then as those diversify, make varations of the color. Frex, White could be green, but North Europeans are lime green while Arabs are moss green and Turks are neon green.
