Actually, if you think of it in a perverse way, gridiron (aka American football) is really a variant of rugby league.

Just an idea no League/Union split and the rules gradually shift towards what we would recognise as Rugby League, with Profesional setup, but far more semi profesional and non profesional clubs at the lower levels.
