Teacher in Space
Today at 4:30 aproximately, my time, the teacher in space program resumes with Idaho teacher, Barbara Morgan, set to blast off. She has waited a very long time for this day. There is an 80 % chance of favorable conditions for the launch and it appears all is favorable at the present time.
All eyes here are on the launch and praying all goes well with this teacher launch.

But this is a real event. Should be in here, really. I was surprised to hear about this yesterday. But then, I've lost touch with the news to some degree, recently... ![]()

Or we could talk about the living one but what fun would that be?

So this was a clean and excellent take off today. The Endeavour is now officially in orbit.
What would have happened if the Challenger hadn't blown up in 1986? Would our space program be farther ahead or about the same?

Further ahead. That hiatus in spaceflight really hurt, and imagine how much faster ISS assembly would go with another shuttle available.

No--we'd still have the same number of shuttles. The Endeavour was built out of spare parts to replace the Challenger. Yeah, but everything would be two years ahead since that's about as long as it took for NASA to get back to space. But a Challenger-esque disaster is inevitable at some point.

Well that was confusing,
I thought I'd mixed it up with real news. But this is real.
SO: this should be in chat. It's NOT alt-history. Right? Well, OK, apart from the stuff about 'WI Challenger hadn't blown up'. But before that was chat.

I disagree. Nothing is inevitable. It's extremely probable, but not inevitable. We may still have something akin to the Columbia disaster, though, which would prompt the construction of an alt-Endeavour, if, of course, the fact that the shuttle is more successful in TTL doesn't mean that more are constructed as a matter of course.
