Japanese language question
For those who speak Japanese and/or know much about Hawaii, what would be a plausible ATL Japanese name for Hawaii? (Or maybe even the existing Japanese name for Hawaii, if it is distinctly different from "Hawaii".) To clarify, this would be for a Japan which has gone through the Meiji Restoration (or a close equivalent).

Presently, Japanese refer to Hawaii in its present name: "Ha-Wa-I". Not to quote movies as good sources, but in the movie "Tora-Tora-Tora" (yes it's old) all the Japanese used was the old style, such as the Govt tried to enforce during WWII. Even to the point of using Japanese words for things that normally use the English equivalent such as "Kompyuta".
Any way, in that show they still referred to Hawaii as "Hawaii". If you wanted some other terms that might be used, "Hi" (pronounced Hee) which is Fire "Yama" or "San" Mountain "Shima" or "Jima" Island "Toi" (pronounced like "toy") is Far You could throw some of those together, or if you have anything else you would like to try, let me know and I can translate them for you.

Then you'd probably go with something like
Toobizan Jima (or Shima, take your pick) ("Toe-Bee-Zan") with the characters looking like: 遠火山島
