DR WHO-BAD NEWS

Ok Dr Who Fans-especially in the UK. Picked up a copy in Barnes and Noble with my-oops-Darth Vader's picture on it for October 2004.DREAMWATCH. I like that as well as others like EMPIRE. Fact is that according to an article in Dreamwatch the negotiations for the Daleks with Terry Nation's estate fell through. This is a contradiction over other American sources I read. Maybe you can confirm this from other sources like SFX. Let's wait and see.

I'm not sure I understand what is the significance here. Are the Daleks as a concept being sold to someone else or the name or what? And wouldn't the BBC own the whole Dr Who franchise anyhow?

Personally, I'm of the opinion that Western intellectual property law should start to follow the Japanese manga/doujinshi example. Imitation, as long as it doesn't cut into your core market, isn't just the sincerest form of flattery but also the best form of advertisement.

BTW, for all the Who fans, Is any one of the Dr Who stories also a retold or original Jerry Cornelius tale?

The latest I've seen is this dated 4 August - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertain...io/3535588.stm

That has negotiations eventually succeeding after an initial breakdown. I don't know, but I would suspect Dreamwatch went to press before that date and missed the news.

NapXIV: no, the Beeb owns Dr Who, but Tdrry Nation kept at least part-ownership of the Daleks, so the BBC had to cut a deal with his estate.

Oh, and the BBC's Cult TV site is saying "They will return" -

http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/doctorwho/newtv/index.shtml

Since they are already filming, though, the Daleks may not make it into the first series.

Yes, Terry Nation appears to be have been one of those guys who gets the idea of how to use modern laws early. Late 1960s DrWho with daleks either had to be his or was supposed to be with his affirmative. There was a major row between him and the BBC over this when several dalek stories were written without him

I too read that Nation's estate were being anti the new Dr Who, but I think after they realised it would be a major aspect of BBC planning not some sci-fi junky short-lived spin-off they changed their mind

The fan publication is called the PRYDONIAN RENAGADE. It's published monthly by folks in the Philadelphia region. I will report about every month when the new issue comes out. I can"t publish the web address because it may not be correct. Will let you know later.

I'm not a particularly big fan of Dr Who, but for those who might be interested, they are currently filming the new series in Cardiff, where I live (BBC Wales won the production contract so they'll be around the city a lot over the next few years).

Last thursday I was pulling into the car park behind the club where my boyfriend was doing a gig. We got out of the car, turned the corner and right in front of us, lit with an ethereal glow (well, some stage lights anyway) was the Tardis. They were filming a scene right alongside the club (for anyone who knows Cardiff they were in between Minsky's, Debenhams, and the public toilets).

The location manager was there and asked us and the club manager to keep the noise down if possible. She was really great and we got to meet Christopher Ecclestone who's playing the new Doctor (he's really short in real life) and Billie Piper who's playing his assistant (really friendly - signed autographs, and the writer Russel T. Davis (the original creator and writer of Queer as Folk, Bob and Rose and The Second Coming).

I'm just kicking myself because I forgot to ask Russel (I'd like to think we're on first name terms now...:-) if the 1996 TV movie is going to be considered part of the canon, with the new doctor taking over from the actor who played him that, or if they're going to ignore it and go back to Sylvestor McCoy.

Dr. Who is to be played by Christopher Ecclestone - a minor British actor known his work in a TV drama called 'The Second Coming' and other minor TV roles. He is quite ideosyncratic and quirky and i think he is quite a good choice for the role. Different to the other doctors though.

His assistant is to be played by Bille Piper, a one-time pop starlet.

Check out the BBC website for more details...

Minor? He's one of the country's top dramatic character actors who's appeared in Let Him Have It, Cracker, Shallow Grave, Our Friends in the North, Hillsborough and Elizabeth.

Dreamwatch are a bastardised magazine if ever there was one

They started out as Dr Who Bulletin more or less in competition with the Marvel Dr Who Magazine, grew a v large cult following not least because of the Forbidden Planet on New Oxford Street (now closed and moved a few hundred metres SE but does everyone know this)

They then transmogrified to DWB and began to cover Red Dwarf and other British sci fi pretty well. It was in this period that I fell in with them. The Dr Who element remained strong and was the under-propulsion for the mag

Then they decided to become a sci fi mag as opposed to either a Dr Who mag or a British sci fi mag. I was frequently critical in this 'Dreamwatch Bulletin' period, it was far too heavily X-Files orientated (who gave a fuck ?) and the Dr Who legacy was becoming like guest articles

Then it went national as Dreamwatch, probably has never looked back since and has completely sold out becoming just a somewhat more interesting version of Starburst (no major achievement), often with whole issues non-British, all-American, and no Dr Who at all
