DBWI: No U.S nationalism
During the second world war united states nationalism brought it to conquer half of North America, only to be beaten by Japan halfway through, WI the ideology never came to be?

Well, let's remember that the Nationalist Party only took power after the economic collapse during the Great Depression... It was doomed to happen with Hoover's failures, some sort of ideology would arise...

Then the US would never have been stupid enough to attack the Japanese base at Pearl Harbor; even if they were doing well against Mexico and Canada, to take on the Imperial Japanese Empire? What were they THINKING?

Well let's remember that the Nationalists claimed Hawai'i as an American territory due to the short-lived attempt by American planters to try to overthrow the Kingdom of Hawai'i....
The US would still be a major power, I'd say... the Japanese would not have split off the Pacific Coast, and the resulting Second Civil War that wiped out much of the rest as a unified nation wouldn't have occured.

Well I think you are forgetting, it wasnīt just Japan that beat USA. I mean USA was doomed to failure from the beginning.
First of all there were groups fighting inside USA against the government. The Baptist Coalation, and the Mormons. Secondly, Britain sent in forces from Australia, Algeria, and Brazil to assist the Canadians and I think the battles of 1940 were just Pyrrhan victories. Besides... If USAīs war machine wouldīve by some miracle liberated Chicaco, they were certainly doomed when the Scandinavians joined in.

I wonder if in the absence of the nationalist party a more leftist movement could have some success in the US. ("more leftist" could mean about as much as "social democratic" here, since the US tend to be economically more on the right than Europe)

Well didn't the balkanisation mouvement started 1920's? a mere 10 year before WWII some historian say that a lot of soon to be Americanist were shocked over it therefore sending them in a radical ideology (the economical off course made it easier for a madman like Nathaniel Essex to take power) . So maybe if the separatist mouvenet doesn't get to live we wouldn't get to power (with all respect for those leaving in the breakaway region).
But Essex didn't start WWII it was merely the oportunity he wanted were Europe would be to occupy to try to prevent the invasion of Sonora.
