PC: Second Korean War After The Fall Of The USSR?

Could there have been a war in Korea after the fall of the USSR? And I mean a war happening by 1994 at the latest.

Assuming Kim Il Sung lived as long as he did, I would see it being difficult. By 1990 Kim Il Sung was very open to peace and possible reunification under a federation. We would need to have him die earlier and have a junta take charge for this scenario to take place.

It would have been a short and bloody war. In the hours before South Korea and the US gain air superiority, the North Koreans shell Seoul. In the brief time, they could lob a nuclear warhead and bring the death toll to the millions.

Larry Bond wrote a novel about this idea. Red Phoenix was the title, IIRC. It was pretty good.

The North Koreans didn't have nuclear weapons in 1994.

I bet the deal turn on NK... the armies of the west, so worked decades on decades for a cold war, kick in... and push on to Pyiongyang.

It will be bloody, of course, but the spirit of days was optimistic, so...
