WI: Weimar Survives
As we all know, when hitler was appointed/elected chancellor, Weimar was effectively dead.
What if Hindenburg turned hitler down? What would happen to Germany? Would the Nazis be defeated?

I don't know to much about that period but from what I know I think he really didnt have much of a choice, you'd need an earlier POD.

It would have to be with a POD prior to 1930. By that point Germany could go one of three ways: Military Junta or Reactionary Dictatorship probably with a restored monarchy, Nazi's or, and this is nearly ASB, Communist.
At no point after 1919 did parties which supported the continued existance of Weimar win a majority in elections. The reason it lasted so long was that its opponents couldn't agree on what to replace it with. By the late '20s those divisions were closing and support for the status quo was fatally undermined by the Great Depression.

problem: The Weimar voter punished compromise.

I think thats a rather blanket statement. And by god, certain groupsp should have acted with less compromises - the SPD and the left groups associated wqith the party were far too... servile to keep the republic up at every price. Well, hindsight is 20/20, as they say...
Anyways, the economy was going up again even before teh Nazis were appointed to the government. Hence, if Weimar survives a few years longer, others could reap the benefits of that. Still, an earlier PoD would be better, at least one before the presidial decree governments, so that it can really be the democratic parteis reaping the benefit. |
