In OTL Lodge, Henry Cabot, Jr was the son of the great Republican politicians from the turn of the centaury; he became the Republicans answer to the Democrat Adlai Stevenson as the voice of the progressive wing of the party however he failed to gain the Republican nomination from the hard line (really quite mad) Barry Goldwarter in the 1964 election.
But what if Lodge had won out and challenged LBJ in 64 or 68 and managed to turn the republicans into a more tolerant and leftwing party possibly turning the whole of U.S politics to the left as a result, What would be the impact on the cold war, Vietnam and civil rights of a Lodge Presidency?
Any Comments?

I think Lodge's best chance of becoming President would be for Nixon to have won in 1960 and for Nixon to have died or been murdered. Had Nixon won in 1960 and the murder attempt against Kennedy that failed in December 1960 had come off against Nixon....

I suspect that his policies would have been very similar to Kennedy's. There would have been a lot of opposition in the Republican Party. Then too there would have been a similar split as OTL in Democrats.

Some kind of far right challenge would still emerge in 1964 either to Lodge's renomination or as a third party
