US ground troops in East Timor 1999

During the 1999 East Timor crisis, the Clinton admin declined the option of providing ground combat troops to be part of the Australian-led INTERFET peacekeeping force, altho USN and USAF logistical assets such as the USS MOBILE BAY and USS BELLEAU WOOD were part of the international relief effort together with approx 300 American noncombat personnel, and 100 or so US police officers who served as blue-bereted CIVPOLs with the UN mission UNTAET. Later in Sept 2000, there was indirect US armed force provided, when the USS TARAWA battlegroup were stationed offshore in case of any renewed largescale militia activity against the ET border. What would've been the impact though of the US deploying say a bn or so from PACOM-based forces such as the 25th TROPIC LIGHTNING Div in Hawaii or the 3rd MEF on Okinawa to serve alongside the Australian, NZ and other international troops in ET ?
