Will start with one of the oldest never ending arguements.
The US Civil War - could it have been politically finessed
or was it preordained? Gradual state by state emancipation of the South 1870 - 1930 except South Carolina, Mississippi and Louisiana. Jim Crow even worse than historical continues in the former slave states. Feds pay for runaways who reach free territory as fugitive slave laws don't work.
America is treated by the rest of the world as a racist pariah despite its
economic strength. The Sun Belt South is economically weaker. The old Rust
belt is stronger. America 1999 still has slaves in these states,
and the overall level of the southern culture appears to be like 1935,
with more tech perhaps. the US is isolationist, and has not built or
become in volved with foreign wars, imperialism, etc. I assume that
states' rights are much stronger, and there is much less of a centralized,
powerful federal government. Tech? Oh we are economically stronger than in OTL. It is just distributed differently among the states and regions. Tech maybe the same but much less in consumer goods in the old South. Federal government does science, internal security, big military-industrial complex but NO social engineering to go with an economically interventionists state as there is NO national concensus of what the social order should be. Basically, it is not so much states rights as state opt out. Imagine national programs where each state must join and some states join NOTHING. Nothing about isolationist. we just do not like other peoples advice about how to handle our social situations.
