Bonus March turns NASTY-very

WWI vets showed up in DC to demand bonuses(DUE l945) but wants now. What would happen if someone throws a bomb at Mcarthur and his boss Sec of War Hurley and kills both as well as George Patton who was in the group and then rioting spread s to the Whie House where rioters kill the President and his wife and toss them into the burning White House. Congress is in session. What next?

As the smoke clears from the Bonus Riot, Vice President Charles Curtis is quickly sworn in as President. He declares martial law, names George Marshall as Army Chief of Staff and orders him to put down the rebellion. Marshall gathers all the available Army troops who can be readily deployed to the Washington area, cordons off the area to prevent the escape of the rioters, and two days after the Bonus Riot, his troops move on Hooverville, the shantytown on the Washington Mall where the Bonus Rebels are encamped. Speaking through a megaphone, Marshall orders the rebels to surrender, but is answered with catcalls, and many of the rebels begin throwing rocks at the Army troops, who despite this provocation, hold their fire. But then a pistol shot rings out...nobody knows from where or fired by whom...and all hell breaks loose. Many of the Bonus Rebels are armed, and a general gunfight erupts between them and the Army troops. Marshall orders the tanks forward...and the bloodiest massacre in American history results. Over 3,000 Bonus Rebels are killed, and almost twice that many wounded. The surviving ringleaders of the Bonus Riot are captured, and will eventually face the electric chair. Congress, although expressing some concerns about the severity of the Army's actions, in the end supports the President. The public, outraged over the senseless murders of President Hoover and, most especially, Mrs. Hoover (who is seen as an innocent victim), completely supports President Curtis and the Army in their response to the Bonus Riots, and Curtis (with George Marshall as his running mate) defeats the Democratic ticket of FDR and Jack Garner in the general election later that year.

One thing Geroge Marshall at this time was a Lt. Col . and what Tanks the tanks corps was dispanded in 1922 . It would have to be some one else .

Ok...so who was around to succeed MacArthur? And the Army did have tanks in 1922...there is newsreel footage showing Renault FT17 tanks being used against Hooverville in the OTL, obviously not as lethally as in this scenario, but they were there nonetheless.

Martial law? For an event in part of one second-rate city? (Sadly, that was the status of DC at the time).

For a bloody riot which results in the burning of the White House and the murder of the President and First Lady? Yes, I think President Curtis would have felt himself well justified in declaring martial law in Washington. I did not intend to imply it was nationwide...only in D.C.

1932 election

Why would a riot between some soldiers and former soldiers affect the election? Why would the 25% unemployed (and their relatives) care? Now if Curtis reflated the economy and unemployed people got back to work...What was Curtis' view on the gold standard?

"Why would a riot between some soldiers and former soldiers affect the election?"

In OTL, the Bonus March had a big effect on the elections. It cemented the image of Hoover as a soulless, isolated figure in the American public's mind. Granted, he was probably screwed due to the Great Depression anyway, but that certainly didn't help matters.

In this TL, the events would be seen as an attempted coup, or, at the very least, signs of something FAR worse than a larger-than-normal economic downturn.

Aside from what Matt said, which is all true, you also have the factor that the President AND HIS WIFE were murdered by the rioters and their bodies thrown into the burning wreck of the White House. If nothing else, Curtis and his party are going to inherit some major sympathy votes (sort of like LBJ in 1964...my parents told me they voted for LBJ in large part because LBJ inherited the office from the slain Kennedy. And I am sure there were a lot of other people whose voting was likewise influenced by the tragic events in Dallas).

I do agree. This would give the election to the Republicans and the riots would be blamed on subversive communist elements in the country. Don't expect a detente with the Soviet Union in the near future for McCarthyism would start much earlier. Known communists would probably be rounded up and sent to camps, or even deported.

But surprisingly, you'd probably see a few New Deal measures being made. Even die hard Republicans use Democrat measures to help strengthen the economy and claim that as a victory while villifying the Democrats. However, this won't go far enough with voters, so you'll probably see a lot of them getting weary by the 1936 elections.
