Italian neutrality in WW2: consequences

I repost this I wrot some days ago, to the general (dis)interest.

Obviously, neutrality would be a blessing for Italy, and Mussolini's name would be much less hated today.
However, Italy would remain for at least two yeras a credible menace in the Mediterranean and Africa

So, let's try a possible timeline.

6-14-40 Paris falls to the Nazis. Mussolini explodes with envy, but has the guts to swallow this and much more. Italian public opinion asks for war, but he decides it's better to wait after receiving clear signs that Britain will resist, and will declare war if France is however attacked

Mussolini looks around and says, "Whew! 'Twas a good idea not to take part in this war, after all!"

Oh, not to worry, Basileus, I've read it and found it interesting, and a good read too! :) I have to wonder though if japan might have chosen to fight it out with USSR instead of taken on a stronger Commeonwealth?

Anyway, I've allways wondered what would happen if Mussolini stayed out of WW2 as any sane man/dictator/italian would have done.
Personally I think that the italian economy would have collapsed and it's industry would have decayed and slowed to a standstill because of lacking resources.
Or perhaps Italy would have benefitted from increased trade betwen a more or less otherwise blokaded Germany and countries like Japan, Argentina and Turkey.
Might even have ganged up on Greece with Turkey and perhaps Bulgaria at some time i the early forties? Anyone know witch kind of relations Rom, Sofia and Ankara had?

Toying with the thought of doing a TL, but it seems that all the angles have been covered on Changing the Times. Oh, well, it's high time I try my hand at some stuff in english! :)

Best regards!

Rich Italy

Italy uses the war to industrialize even more, without the expense of the war. They sell wine to Germany in return for machine tools and coal. Britain restricts their imports to make sure that they don't leak to Germany, but otherwise they have their hands full and don't go looking for trouble. Italy stays out of the war entirely. Greece isn't worth it, if there is the danger of getting involved in WWII. The Italian people are very happy. WWII was very unpopular, after the disaster of WWI.
Yugoslavia stays neutral, as does Greece, letting the Germans attack Russia a little earlier, but slower because in May there is still a lot of mud on the ground in Russia.
This is also bad for Russia because the German airforce isn't partially tied down in North Africa. Even worse, Italy is importing oil instead of consuming German oil from stockpiles and synthetic fuel plants, and Rumanian oil. Oil was the key limiting factor in WWII. Now the Germans have a lot more oil. This is even worse for the Russians than more German planes.
The US invades France directly across the beaches in 1943, but we don't do so good because we haven't had the practice in North Africa. On the other hand, we are invading with more landing craft and more aircraft, ditto, and the Germans haven't fortified as much as in 1944. They are still expecting us in the Balkans because they expect us to stab Russia in the back and grab the Balkans for ourselves. It's what they would have done.
We still stay in Europe even if not as rapidly successfull as in OTL. We bomb the hell out of Germany for 18 months, just like OTL, and they give up in the winter of 1945, six months earlier. Japan surrenders at the same time. No bombs are dropped, but we still announce we have them to influence Russian action. Russia is not as well off in this war as in OTL because the Germans had a lot more oil, more aircraft, and a little more armor, artillary, ammunition, and infantry without the Mediterranean sideshow. They do get more assistance from the US through the Black Sea once the Germans lose the Balkans up to the Aegean. That keeps the Russian armies fed and the population not as starved and destitute.
Italy stays fascist, like Spain. Ciano takes over and liberalizes Italy in the late fifties, twenty years earlier than Spain.
