Repost: Spanish Discovery of New Zealand, 1607

This is pretty funny, and I'm sure it will be somewhat objectionable to our Kiwi friends! :D

Captain Pedro Fernandez de Quiros sails his ships from Callao to map the mysterious Terra Australis Incognita. Having already mapped the New Hebrides he turns east to Fiji and Samoa, turns south to Tonga and continues to the North Island of New Zealand. Soon discovering that this is no small island he sets to map the coastline, over the next year and a half he sails down the east coast, misses the Cook Strait, continues to sail all around the South Island, until reaching what we know as Tasman Bay. Upon meeting the local Maori, Quiros recalls a passage from Montalvo's Sagas of Esplandian

I tell you that on the right-hand side of the Indies there was an island called California, which was very close to the region of the Terrestrial Paradise. This island was inhabited by black women, and there were no males among them at all, for their life style was similar to that of the Amazons. The island was made up of the wildest cliffs and the sharpest precipices found anywhere in the world. These women had energetic bodies and courageous, ardent hearts, and they were very strong.

And hence the discovery of California in the South Pacific! :D
