Was there any conceivable way that Hong Kong in 1997, after the expiry mof Britain's lease, could've gone its own way to become an independent country, instead of being handed back to Red China ?

In view of China's attitude to Taiwan I can't imagine a situation in 1997 where the Chinese would have permitted Hong Kong independence - even if that meant sending in the military to enforce its reurn
