Nixon in 1960

The big changes:
- Nixon does NOT cancel the second air strike at the Bay of Pigs - landing
suceeds. Marines sent in to protect provisional government and
'protect' the island. US condemmed worldwide. Fidel and co swapped for
Gulag prisoners. Shootouts on the island between US forces and the Russian
garrison.
- The Kennedy tax cuts never happen - took a Democrat to get them through. Soft 50's economy continues.
- There is no Taylor mission - US forces in RVN remain at a training plus
special ops level. When the Diem coup botches, we pull our line of defense
back to Thailand after evacuating several million refugees.
The little Saigons of America come a decade early.
- Khrushchev doesn't need to test Nixon - no Berlin crisis in 61-62 but
Wall does go up.
- Civil Rights bills pass as marginal Republicans vote YES to back the
White House. They are weaker than our historical ones. Voting rights and
civil liberties with some Federal enforcement but no national policy of
integration.
- The one Supreme Court appointment does not delute the Warren majority.
- Not having campaigned on the 'missle gap', Nixon has no need to mount
crash strategic weapons program to combat nonexistant Sov missle threat.
- Space program is smaller and more military opriented
- The civil rights and lifestyle'new left' ( Freedom Rides,
antiantiCommunism, Free Speech movement, etc. ) is from the beginning an
open arm of the Democratic Party. Party sheds moderates and southerners to
the Republicans.
- Successful Bay of Pigs = No Cuban Missile Crisis
- A) No Vietnam War or B) Successful Vietnam War
- Johnson's Immigration Act Never Passed = Smaller Population in 2003
- Civil Right's Act Still Passed (With Limitations, i.e. Segregation Limited, Not Banned)
- Liberal Reaction to Nixon's Admin. in 70's
- Full Civil Right's Act in '72
- Music and Drug Scene grows slower and is more acceptable to mainstream culture(pot legalized in the 70's for one)
- Conservative 1980's and 1990's
- Possible War with China over Taiwan
- Possibly Goes Nuclear
- War with China = War with North Korea
- Larger Tech Leads to Costly US Victory
- Reinvigoration of US Economy
- Nuclear War Between India and Pakistan
- Leaves India in Shambles, Pakistan in Rubble
- Closer Relations with South Korea, Taiwan, Australia, and New Zealand
- Weaker Relations with Europe

The US in 2003:
- Smaller population (235 - 255 million)
- Larger middle class
- Black population more successful, no labor competition
- Manufacturing still big
- Less civil violence
- Less class conflict
- No NAFTA
- Free trade limited
- Closer European Community
- Strong-Post War Economy
- Strong alliances with Australia,Canada,Cuban Republic and New Zealand
- Tech levels approxiamately 3-4 yrs ahead
- more liberal social policies since the excesses of the 60's are far lesser and no real backlash due to the slower liberalization.
- AIDS being completely wiped in the USA/Canada due to the governmnet being willing to use extreme quarantine

LoL, did you get that from one of my posts on the old forum? I posted almost that exact same thing in the "Nixon in '60" thread. So yes, I agree with your analysis.

I'll give you another one but it is NOT predetermined by what came before, just influenced. Demo Party without LBJ breaks up at the Atlantic City convention - left nominates Robert Kennedy, center nominates Hubert Humphrey and Dixie nominates George C Wallace. Nixon reelected (Eisenhower's 4th term). Ungoing race riots put much of the formerly Demo white vote into the GOP collumn. The Thai War attracts large opposition (but much less than OTL )but does not need large draft calls ( US forces capped at 75,000 plus large ROK and other 'allies' who send troops for cash). War boom revives economy but does not overheat as Nam did ( so the big economic collapse of the 70's does not happen). War goes on 65 - 87 and ends with an economically modernized Thailand, Malayasia, Singapore, and Indonesia joining NAFTA ( North Atlantic Free Trade area formed 1964 with US, Canada, UK, Eire - Australia and New Zealand join 1966, Cuba + DR + Haiti + Brit west Indies + Central America are associate members same year; Japan,ROK, ROC join 1970).
Europe and NAFTA part company in mid 70's. NATO disolved. EU is 'Finlandized'. Israel and Turkey are NAFTA outposts in a EU + Arab League + Soviet MidEast. Gulf is all taken by radical coups after 1973 Arab Israeli war. Iran is an Islamic hermit kingdom taking covert NAFTA support. Pakistan was destroyed by India in 1971. Afghanistan is part of the USSR. China is military ally of US and rapidly modernizing. Greater Vietnam includes all of Laos and cambodia plus pieces of North Burma and N + NE Thailand but has lost major border areas to China in the 79-80 war. The Parcels and Spratleys are US occuppied outposts garrisoned by Indonesian and Phillipine mercs under the US flag. India is a major Russian ally but an economic basket case. Rump Burma is a Chinese sattelite with very little real independence. Sri Lanka is divided into NAFTA and Indian zones with an endless war of terror continuing despite the joint occupation. The bulk of Afrika is a EU - Russian playground except for South Afrika (where President Mandella rules a joint ANC - Afrikanner military state), Namibia - a South African sattelite, Mozambique where RENAMO rules propped on RSA guns. Liberia and the cape
Verdes are US sattelites. The RSA has annexed Botswana, Lesetho, waziland,
part of Mozambique and Zimbabwe. The Red wing of the former ANC still struggles from overseas and underground to bring about a peoples state in the RSA / Azania. UNITA rules most of Angola but expatriate Cuban, Russian and French troops hold the coastal cities for the MPLA. Zaire is propped up by US paid mercs from its other client states of Rwanda, Burundi and refugee mercs from the African Horn, Malawi, and Nubia. Mobutu met with a convenient accident and Holden Roberto is content to rule as his American and RSA advisors order. Argentina, Peru, Venezuela are in the EU - Ru bloc. Chile, Brazil,Bolivia, Urugauy are military dictatorships under US protection. Columbia, Paraguay and Ecudor are contested zones reduced to a Mad Max level of existance. Revolt simmers across much of the 3rd world. Everyone backs rebels of any sort against their foes. the Cold War has crystalized. The US and EU are wary economic giants with much interinvestment but much suspision and much less real trade than today. There is a sizeable Europe refugee population in the NAFTA countries and a sizeable US, UK, Latin american one in the EU. US civilian standards of livings are ten years ahead of today. tech is maybe 5 years ahead. Both the US and Europe/Ru have large space programs including lunar, L-5, asteroid bases. Both have major SPS systems and both have effective ABM systems in orbit. Both have kenetic energy weapons available and do considerable space manufacturing making major use of asteriodal, lunar and near earth asteroidal materials. The earth is a cleaner planet, especially in the 3rd world, japan and Russia. Minor drug use is more widely tolerated than in OTL, major drug use was never made glamorous and is much less common.
