The big changes:
- Nixon does NOT cancel the second air strike at the Bay of Pigs - landing
suceeds. Marines sent in to protect provisional government and
'protect' the island. US condemmed worldwide. Fidel and co swapped for
Gulag prisoners. Shootouts on the island between US forces and the Russian
garrison.
- The Kennedy tax cuts never happen - took a Democrat to get them through. Soft 50's economy continues.
- There is no Taylor mission - US forces in RVN remain at a training plus
special ops level. When the Diem coup botches, we pull our line of defense
back to Thailand after evacuating several million refugees.
The little Saigons of America come a decade early.
- Khrushchev doesn't need to test Nixon - no Berlin crisis in 61-62 but
Wall does go up.
- Civil Rights bills pass as marginal Republicans vote YES to back the
White House. They are weaker than our historical ones. Voting rights and
civil liberties with some Federal enforcement but no national policy of
integration.
- The one Supreme Court appointment does not delute the Warren majority.
- Not having campaigned on the 'missle gap', Nixon has no need to mount
crash strategic weapons program to combat nonexistant Sov missle threat.
- Space program is smaller and more military opriented
- The civil rights and lifestyle'new left' ( Freedom Rides,
antiantiCommunism, Free Speech movement, etc. ) is from the beginning an
open arm of the Democratic Party. Party sheds moderates and southerners to
the Republicans.
