Retrofuturistic illustrations are like car commercials: they wish away the existence of traffic jams.
Although I recall one specific SF short story from the 1950s (can't remember the author, but the title was "Gas Mask") which featured a giant traffic jam leaving people stranded on the freeway for days on end. The title refers to the choking fumes emitted by so many engines running simultaneously.
