War : Holy Roman Empire vs Byzantine Empire

The only theater that I could think that they could clash is in Italy. So the Holy Roman Empire decides to drive out the Byzantines completely from Southern Italy in the late 10th century before the Normans could do it.

The Byzantines lose their remaining towns in Italy to the HRE.

I think Henry VI, if he had lived longer, might have cast a glance in that direction...

Maybe if Emperor Isaak Angelos maintained his throne, Henry could have openly declared war against him ? Maybe Henry fighting a loose coalition of Issak´s Byzanz, Tankred´s Sicily and the Caliph of Tunis & Tripolis ? On the other hand the Byzantines were in big trouble: rebellions on the Balkan and Seljuk invasion.

Henry's plan was to overthrown Alexius and put Philip of Swabia (Henry's brother and Alexius' brother-in-law on the throne). I don't think he would move against Isaac.

I'm kinda skeptical about the success of Henry's adventures, especially with the HRE home front being pretty erratic.

Would be cool having philip on byz throne though to keep it he prob has to convert. Stil with philip as emperor rather than the uggh Alexius III., I think the empire could recover

Correction: I mistook the Alexios, Alexios III is Philip's uncle-in-law.

OTL Alexios IV was Philip's brother-in-law.

You think, they accept Phillp as a foreigner on the Byzantine throne ?

Wouldnt be the firat time armenians, georgians, goths etc all had been emperors before. The only requirement was orthodoxy. Not to mention philip was related to byzantine royalty and so he has that going for him and so if he converts to orthodox the magnates would take him over shitty alexius iii.

Unwise, I think.

Because that's an environment in which the Hautevilles are going to join in with glee, once it starts and particularly after it starts, and perhaps with even greater success than in OTL.

What if the two realms of self proclaimed Roman continuity clash in an actual war ? When and how ?

If i'm correct HRE and ERE were in war (cold then hot then cold :D) during the reign of Irene of Athens. The reason was the allegiance of the principality of Benevento. And it wasn't at the advantage of ERE
