What if Hawaii had remained its own kingdom rather than being annexed by the United States? How would things have changed?

I don't see Hawaii remaining independent. Best case for the country might be that it becomes protectorate of United Kingdom and gains full independence during last half of 20th century.

Protectorates can be pretty light handed.

A late uk protectorate and/or strong alliance would have some interesting effects with regard to us interest in asia.
