Israel conscripts American Jews

What if Israel extended citizenship to all American Jews weather they wanted it or not and then began attempting to conscript non-Israelis into the IDF while labeling anybody who didn't want any part in it a self-hating Jew?

Most American Jews would basically ignore the conscription notice. If Israel decided to start conscripting visiting American Jews, then they'd lose support in the United States and that's not good.

Exactly, the Israelis have nothing to gain by doing something that stupid. They are neither morons nor completely insane.

I'd suspect that those who wouldn't want anything to do with it would renounce it. Not sure what procedure is for Israeli citizenship but I guess it's either legally possible or people would officially declare they don't want it.

Also what would US reaction be to such large number of dual citizens? At best these now-dual citizens will face extensive background checks when applying for certain jobs, at worst they will be told to take a hike.

Also why single out Americans? Why not say "all Jews, no matter where they live, are considered to be citizens of Israel". Of course it will be problem for Jews living in countries with, errrr, spotty human rights records.

All Jews have the right to become citizens of Israel. Why would Israel force citizenship on anyone?
This seems like an 1812 scenario. A state believes that people who claim to be US citizens are actually their citizens and presses them into service. If the US didn't put up with it 200 years ago when they were much weaker they won't now.
What does Israel gain from this except alienating their staunchest defender in the UN?

Especially anti-Semitic countries like the Ukraine where the decree would probably be met with a new wave of pogroms.

I don't understand how this is even remotely supposed to work. Why would Israel antagonize both American Jews and the US in exchange for basically nothing?

practical example, Morocco considers all Moroccans citizens of Morocco, even their children when they are born in another country and forces them to have a Moroccan passport. So the whole scenario is not as far fetched as you might think.

why would they want to do it? i don't know, but politics sometimes goes in strange ways

To add to that, Turkey does the same but actually expects the children of emigrants to serve out their national service, or pay it off. So, this actually happens, although of course the ancestors of third-generation immigrants actually were Turkish residents at one point.

Iirc Poland sort of had this rule until recently. I dont know much about it, but it was taken seriously, for example, a friend's dad was told not to visit Poland by the NZ foreign service as a young man in the 70s, as his father, a Jewish refugee, was born in what became Polish territory. In the NZFS's opinion, he would have been liable for conscription if he had visited and they would not be able to stop it.

don't use asb that easy, improbable maybe, but not impossible

if it does happen, expect some kind of religious reason for it since that kind of politics tends to do the weirdest things.

If Israel were invaded and on the verge of destruction perhaps they would do something along these lines.

No it's not likely, but desperation has seen stranger things happen.

So while unlikely I wouldn't say ASB.

Still doesn't explain why it applies only to American Jews and not other non-Israeli ones.....

Israel does something similar, but the conscription is linked with residency. Anyone who asks gets an exemption as long as they spend no more than 120 days a year in Israel, with the exception of a single year (365 days, no January 1 to January 1) where they can spend a full year. And they don't like try to kidnap people abroad or anything.
