Jimmy Carter runs again (2000)

This is probably crazy, but just for fun.

What if former President Jimmy Carter jumped into the Democratic primary in 2000? :D:D:D

He'd get crushed. I don't know any good PODs for him to do this, but one thing I do know is it wouldn't end well for him.

Would not win.

Only chance I can see is maybe 92 where Clinton's problems are worse...maybe a smoking gun sex tape is uncovered just before New Hampshire primary and Hilary decides not to do the forgiving spouse routine

He probably decided to run again, as a result of the fashion for "Carter nostalgia". I have to say it got out of hand - what with NASA launch a giant spaceship just to crash into the atmosphere to re-enact the Skylab re-entry, and others deciding to add his head to Mount Rushmore

This isn't quite as bad as Harold Stassen running, but Carter is not a realistic candidate in 2000. He'll split any protest vote that went to Bill Bradley. He'll quickly be ignored after the first few primaries.

No essential change.

Excellent point. Personally I don't think Carter even takes Georgia. He would have been too old and too lacking in positive Presidential credentials.

However I will try to come up with a reasonable PoD.

It's not worth much but I would have voted for him. He's got a solid human rights record and is very progressive. Maybe he could attract a Ralph Nader like following?

Possible. The Human Rights angle could be played up by a cunning political team. Make him out a decent, world-wise man who never gave up his values etc. etc.

He talked a good game on human rights. But through '77, '78, etc, we continued to give military aid to some pretty sorry dictators. Of course we did, that was standard practice for the time.

He gets ripped apart in the primary's and his legacy is destroyed as every single hypocritical mistake that he made is dragged into the lime light and shoved down the American public's throat. The Clinton political machine would be gleefully turned to destroying the man over what he did to Bill Clinton when he went off the reservation and did that moronic shuttle diplomacy stunt with the North Koreans. Carter as an ex president and humanitarian has a future, put him in the political arena again and he becomes a cold war monster who cloaked his hypocrisy with progressive rhetoric and false assurances of human rights.

(No i don't like Carter, why do you ask?)

Reagan was no better, even if he didn't cloak his evils in progressivism.

President Carter, why didn't you do more about Cambodia? That would be the big question, which affected the largest number of people.

But he would also get questions (if the media was on the ball!) , why dud we continue to prop up this and that dictatorship during your administration? Because that's the way the cold war was conducted. Carter may have even slightly toned this down, but he's still more guilty than not.
