AHC: Have Western Sahara join Morocco

How about the western sahara becomes an autonomous region of Morocco rather than being annexed out right.

Anything for as long as Western Sahara is an integral part of Morocco, whether it be an autonomous region (but not an occupied region by the military; there is a civilian government there).

Western Sahara Joins Morocco in 1955

The sine qua non of the transfer of the Western Sahara from Spain to Morocco would have been a change in the attitude of the Franco regime. After all, it was Franco's desire to retain the remnants of the Spanish Empire that led him to devote considerable resources to the retention of that territory.

This change in attitude could be the result of:

1. The death of Franco.
2. A deal between Spain and Morocco that traded the Western Sahara for guarantees of continued Spanish control over it's enclaves in North Africa.
3. A shift in US policy that made US support for Spain contingent upon the transfer of the Western Sahara to Morocco. (This, in turn, might have been a product of a somewhat different attitude towards the FLN in Algeria and Arab Republicanism in general.)

Find some way for France to not become involved in the Ifni War so that with a bit of luck the Moroccan Army of Liberation is able to capture Sidi Infi, Cape Juby and Spanish Sahara. Franco will likely refuse to countenance any kind of peace deal so the conflict settles down into an on-going stalemate that drags on for a number of years with Morocco as the de facto owner until it's finally officially settled with their being acknowledged as the de jure owners of the Southern Provinces.

The other solution is that as Spain is starting to dismantle the remnants of its empire in 1975 the Moroccans approaches them with the offer of a deal where they'll pay them to transfer Spanish Sahara to Morocco. Since they're already on the way out the door the Spanish decide to make a small amount of money to help defray their shutting down costs.
