It does sound pretty unique, for sure.....but what's the POD going to be? It may be true that Southerners tended not to be as fearful of the Mormons as Yankees were, but that may simply be because the Mormons were mostly a Northern phenomenon, by and large(well, there were a couple of exceptions: here in Texas, they actually did set up a couple of short lived colonies, though I forget the names at the moment).

I've always heard the south was more hostile when they tried to proselytize there.

TL sounds interesting.

Well, okay, that might be true; TBH, I don't really know much at all about Mormons and the South, other than the colonies in Texas.....but, amazingly enough, I do have a couple of relatives, the Taylors, who actually became some of the first Mormon settlers(the wife, a sister of a direct maternal ancestor!), and both Southerners at that(more specifically, Taylor was from North Carolina, and his wife, from Virginia)!

BTW, Baconheimer, if you'd like to consider using the Taylor family for your story, feel free! They would fit quite well into the setting, IMHO. ;)

I will be making a few changes right from the start of Mormonism, with different converts in the early years who have more of a focus on the Appalachians rather than the Midwest. I admit that the number of Converts might be larger than likely, but hopefully that will be explained in the TL.

Interesting... I'll stick around to see what happens. You got yourself a subscriber
Thanks.:)

The POD here will be right near the beginning of the religion, so hopefully much of that will be done away with.

I dont know how well I will be able to use those two people in the TL, but I will if the opportunity arises. But thanks for the suggestion.

Just an update. I am still planning on working on this TL, just having a summer class is making it hard to work on this.

Problematic on the face of it

This seems dubious at best. The Mormons were strongly anti-slavery which was a major factor in the opposition to them that sprung up in Missouri (pro-slavery factions) felt that they were "tipping the balance." The opposition got severe enough that there were multiple murders of Mormons, the Haun's Mill Massacre, Gov Boggs put out an "Extermination Order" on Mormons (not rescinded technically for about 150 years), and the Mormons were driven from the state in the dead of winter.

The only ways, you could have a sizeable Mormon population in the pre-ACW South was if either, the Southern area in question didn't care about anti-slavery views (unlikely) or Mormons change their views on slavery (being divinely-based that's very unlikely).

Mormons in the settled south is quite unlikely, for reasons that have already been stated, but perhaps they settle in some unoccupied corner of Texas?

They wouldn't fight for the CSA regardless due to the whole slavery thing.

Maybe they fight for the Union and in return, get their own "Deseret" state carved out of West Texas?
