AHC: Have Brits keep the southern colonies, make northern colonies more federalized

Your challenge is to create a legit scenario in which the British Crown gets to keep the southern colonies (Virginia and down) and the remaining northern ones become somewhat of a militarized federal government, with the POD being in the later years of the war.

Bonus points if the north is led by Horatio Gates both as a General and a President.

Double bonus points if the south gets to keep some semblance of autonomy.

If the British hang onto the southern colonies, the northern United States would, by definition, have to be militarized.

Also, to hang onto the south, the British would have to offer the same deal as was offered in 1777. Local government and no taxation but nominally under British rule.

One of my ATL's is a massive slave rebellions breaks out in Virginia, leading to emanciapation, which leads to NC and SC not joining the nascent United States and seeking to return to Britain's embrace, on NC/SC's terms (local government, free to Britain but personal union with the King).

Have you read Glen's Dominion of Southern America timeline? The point of divergence is about a decade before the revolution kicked off but it's the only one I can think of off the top of my head.

That would be interesting a British empire will so many territories in love with having slaves they wouldn't be outlawing it in 1833 that's for sure.
