Prime Minister Morrison?

One thing that would be certain is a less extensive and therefore initially cheaper NHS, and given his generally anti-Soviet stance he may also be more supportive of other figures within Labour's right wing such as the two Hughs (Dalton and Gaitskell). Consider me a taker.

Herbert Morrison wins 1935 labour leadership after Attlee decides to remain deputy leader.

Any thoughts?

It's an interesting idea but I think your PoD is wrong, Morrison lost his seat in Labour's 1931 meltdown and didn't regain it until 1935 so he has probably fallen too far down the pecking order to credibly challenge Atlee. Perhaps instead he manages to hang on or gets back in through a by-election?

That makes sense. Just curious, who did he lose to IOTL?

yes, I forgot he lost his seat, let the POD be that he holds on to his seat in 1931, then runs for the leadership in 1935 against greenwood and wins

Ok, cool. When can we expect the first timeline post?

Judging by the other threads I think the OP simply likes asking WI someone else won a British general election and then moves on. I don't expect a real follow up but let's wait and see.

With a 1931 PoD we might have something to play with. He was Minister for Transport until 1931, so what differences could he have made to infrastructure up until the fall of the National Government in 1935?

What were his attitudes toward India?

Perhaps with his anti-Soviet stance he might persuade Churchill to make a grab for Heligoland in 1945.:D

he wouldn't have been in the government, remember the labour party left the national government in October 1931, he would have been in opposition

There's a Prime Minister Morrison chapter in the book Prime Ministers Who Never Were if you're interested.

I know, read it, loved it:)

was wondering what difference he would have made as leader during the war though, and as labour leader in 1945, labour would certainly have gained more votes, probably over 50% of the popular vote

Well I'm still interested, the growth of the welfare state and Britain's status post war will be very different (he supported the attack on Suez in 1956 IOTL).

also the 1950 election would have been very different, Morrison probably wouldn't have gone through with the representation of the people act, so labour would win another landslide majority in 1950, and maybe even a third term in 1955
