AHC: Keep Charleston, SC one of the largest cities in the US

Up until 1850, Charleston, South Carolina was one of the 10 largest cities in the United States by population. Afterward, it fell off the list and is now 205th with only 127,000 people. How can you keep Charleston one of the 10 largest cities up to the present.

No American Civil War would be a start, it really sped up the decline of the South for a long time. Something that didn't turn around until the 1950's. Part of it could be having South Carolina actually spinning its own cotton instead of sending almost all of it north.

You might be able to have a Charleston with half a million people, but it'd take a hell of a POD to pull that off, TBH.
