Chesapeake-Leopard Affair

I am curious what the British response would be if the meeting had turned out differently. Say Barron isn't ineptly unprepared for battle and fights back. For the sake of argument, say the Chesapeake wins and tows the captured Leopard into Newport News (I don't care about the battle or if Barron could have won etc etc). What would the American and more importantly the British response be?

IMHO I don't see the British going to was over it, just increase naval presence off the Atlantic seaboard. I can see the Americans being pressured to return the ship. Barron would be a hero. Could it also butterfly the disastrous Embargo Act?

The problem with your scenario is that the British ship, HMS Leopard isn't a frigate but is a fourth-rate ship with 50 guns, 22 of which were 24-pounders. She therefore substantially outranges and out-guns the Chesapeake.

Consider Little Belt and President...

The relationships between the US, UK, and France between 1783 and 1812 have so many potential deltas about the only line-up I can't imagine is Britain and France in alliance against the US.

THAT would be ASB, but just about anything else is possible.;)

Best,
