So for those who are not familiar with the story, Dido Elizabeth Belle was the daughter of an African slave and a British army officer. Rather than have his daughter be raised as a slave, her father, John Lindsay, brought her to England to live and stay with her great uncle, William Murray, who was Lord Chief Justice in England at the time and ruled against slavery in two landmark cases. For the sake of argument, let us say Dido was never born and never went to live with her great uncle. Would William Murray still have ruled against slavery, or would he still have ruled against it even without Dido's influence?
