[DBWI] Alternate Symbols for Communism

What would the symbol of Communism be today if Comrades Mussolini and Gramsci had not decided that it be the fasces (representing "proletarian strength through proletarian unity")?

A human hand? Seems like as close to a universal symbol of humanity as you can get. Maybe as a closed fist? Or two hands shaking?

How about the "hammer-and-sickle" symbol?

For the workers and farmers right? I don't know, seems too similar to the 'hammer and sword' of Nazi Germany.

Didn't the Soviet Union use that symbol during the Civil War, before adopting the fasces after Mussolini's takeover of Italy?

You must be posting from an ATL. In OTL, of course, the attempt to establish Communism in Russia was abortive, but suppose it had succeeded? For a while the Russian Communists combined the Red Flag with the Russian naval ensign and thirteen stars representing the thirteen "soviet republics" to get this flag:

But then, of course, they came to their senses and changed it from this flag that looks like the Confederate Battle Jack to a flag featuring the fasces.

The Swastika?

Here's an image of it's use in the Abortive Bolshevik State before it's collapse. They seemed rather fond of the Swastika, so it would be no suprise they use it on their flag once they win; Mussolini could always use it to honor his Eastern cousins. It's certainly striking, and it would stop the Turkish Social Government using it.

Given that the Bolsheviks had the hammer and sickle, the IWW had a red fist, and many other groups had some variant on a handshake or a red rose, I'd fully expect any of those could fulfill the purpose.

My personal preference is the Red Rose.

A more unified communist movement could adopt an unadorned red flag. What's a better symbol for the unified proletariat than a plain field?

Hammer and plough were also often-used symbols by other Russian pre-revolutionary left-wing movements, namely the SRs.

Here in Britain the torch of liberty briefly became synonymous with Communism after the crushing of the short-lived Clyde Soviet in the 1920s. It got a bad name but by the time of the post-War election it had come back into use as the emblem of the Liberals.

Maybe if Maclean and Maxton had succeeded the torch would have become a permanent fixture? Though that's probably ASB. They were also very big on cogs, IIRC, and indeed our (Britain's) modern trade union movement uses them to symbolise Communism.
