Indian Elephants introduced by British Empire into South America 19th Century

Indian workers had been brought from India to the South American colonies, like Guyana and Suriname, where their decendants make up a huge percentage of today´s population. What if the British decide to introduce Elephants and their Mahouts to Guyana , possibly to explore certain tropic Jungle terrain to built railways etc. later ? Maybe somehow a wild feral population develops.

South American Elephants?

The mind, it boggles.

I feel very, very sorry for a large number of native species. They won't have the faintest idea what to do with these elephants. (Though, vice versa also holds).

Agreed that this would be awesome to see. A feral population, given the right conditions, could spread into Brazil and Venezuela. Not sure if the elephants would find their new habitat suitable or not, but at least the climate would be pretty similar to their home territory. Their commercial viability would depend on particular industries, such as logging or clearing. Yeah, interesting to consider.

Don't be so sure:

One of these things was still around in Colombia in 4000 BC (C14 dated bones). At least. Unfortunately, all internet discussion in elephant-like figures of Native American art seems to be seized by Mormons, creationists or "hidden history" types. If any of the purported examples is real and depicts mastodons, it could push forward their extinction to the Roman era, which is last hour to evolution.

Neither feral horses nor Pablo Escobar's hippos have wrecked the environment. The elephants would fill another recently vacant niche, and they don't exactly breed like rabbits.

Well, today I learned! #Schooled! That would certainly be good. I guess then we could hear about South American Ivory Poachers, if the Elephants became comfortable.

Mmmm, Brazilian Ivory, has a good ring to it.

When the Emperor Claudius invaded Britain the Romans brought with them the rabbit and the elephant. Fortunately only the rabbit became established.......

That was probably the problem. The elephants kept falling into the rabbit holes.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but elephants are not domestic animals. They're mostly captured in the wild and trained due to a long reproductive cycle. I don't think it's feasible.
