I know there's a lot of you lads who have a lot of energy and online time (it being summer and all). Now here's a grand project for you put your minds toward in between bouts of onanism. In four years of this site, there have been long and stimulating discussions on any of a variety of PODs, which virtually no one can claim to have seen all of. How about those of you with time on your hands go back and find some good discussions on certain PODs and link them to the wiki? That way, when someone has a brilliant idea about, say, more European settlement in South Africa, the first thing they can do is look at the "South Africa" page on the wiki and see a few discussions that have already come up about it. That way, we have constant new and interesting discussions, instead of new people coming along every few months, posting the same topic, and being told by oldtimers that it's been discussed already (without linking to the old topic or explaining what the old conclusions were).
This is not just some suggestion, though. This will be a graded event. Every person who does add old discussion links to the appropriate wiki page will be granted between 0-5 points for relevance, etc, as well as bonus points adjudicated by me. Don't try to just edit as many links as possible in, because you won't get points.
When you edit a link in, post it in this thread to be judged. I will post the running point total.
The 1st through 3rd highest point totals on September 15th, 2008, will receive prizes, the nature of which I have not yet determined but will when the time gets closer. These prizes will actually have monetary value, because I'm a nice guy like that. For example, anyone want a copy of Civilization IV?
Go!

That sounds interesting! It might tie in with some of the research I'm doing for a TL.
Perhaps you should post this in the non-political chat forum too.

I'm going to be scoring pretty conservatively. It was a good link to a good thread. A couple of comments, though. First, it linked to the 8th page of the thread and not the first. Similarly, your Mongol one linked to the third page and not the first. Strip off the "&page=3" before linking. Second, I prefer in text links. This (http://wiki.alternatehistory.com/doku.php/pods/mongol_invasion) is better than http://wiki.alternatehistory.com/doku.php/pods/mongol_invasion. A bit more exposition about the thread, or fitting the context in which you link the thread to its contents will be worth bonus points. Great start!

The WWI one is a two-pointer. Hint for anyone seeking easy points: There are at least one or two threads discussing each of those PODs. The No World Wars page is a bit sparse just yet, so it's only one point.

I also added another thread to WWI (What if America had stayed out) and a discussion on the results to Austia-Hungary Empire if there was no WW1 to the no WW post, i'll be updating these pages more than the before 1900 PODS, simply because i'm more familiar with these areas of history :D
If you need the links they are on my above post already..
Okay a quick edit on

Four points, again. Good exposition.
One concern I have is that if we add a dozen POD links to a wiki article, we might be hopelessly confusing it. Let's keep in mind that the purpose of an article is to give a good introduction to a topic. Reread the articles you've edited afterward and see if they're still a good basic introduction. You guys are doing good with that so far, this is just something to keep up in the future.

ARGH. The East Frankish Kingdom became the German Kingdom at the LATEST with the ascension of Henry I. the Fowler. If not earlier - remember that Louis II, first East Frankish king was called "the German". So, that needs to go out. I think it can be renamed into "East Frankish and early German Kingdom", though.
Having Westphalia as turning point is good, but I still say 1500 and not 1520 should be the other turnpoint. A LOT of stuff happened at the turn of that century, not only the reformation, which is why in history its said that the middle ages roughly end at 1500. Besides, its IMO better to have ALL of Reformation and its prehistory in one section.
And, really, splitting the High Middle Ages into two? That period doesnt get many PoDs anyways. IMO, that makes little sense. Of course, making Westphalia turnpoint makes sense.
So, Ill change the timeframe again ;) Yeah Edit War - but of course with accompanying discussion, so things should be good.

Rename it then, but keep it - it should be used as general category for "that thing which is neither France nor Italy until the Imperial Crown was given.

considering that the HRE after Friedrich II was a totally different beast then before him makes it imo an important enough period to put in.
While that is true, how many popular PoDs do you know happening between Frederick II and the Reformation? Maybe some on the Luxemburgs, but they arent really popular, and some on Habsburg marriage policy, but only because that turned out to be so important after 1500 IOTL... Does it deserve an own category hence?
Oh, also my period naming may be a bit awkward. Comments on that?
Kabraloth
June 23rd, 2008, 05:25 PM
Gladi did a thread about the Luxemburgs. That's enough for me. And it damn well better be enough for you. :p
So, let's see...
Eastern Frankish and early German Kingdom (843 - 961)
-> Is fine.
Holy Roman Empire in the High and Late Middle Ages (962 - 1500)
-> Is fine, but I'd rephrase it to "in the Middle Ages", because in the early middle ages, there was no HRE.
Early Modern Era until the Peace of Westphalia (1500-1648)
-> Is fine
Early Modern Era from the Peace of Westphalia to Dissolution (1648-1806)
-> Is silly, you do not need Modern Era in there, imo.
Napoleonic Germany and German Confederation (1807 - 1870)
-> What about the Northern German Confederation? How about "From Napoleon to Sedan"? :p
Second German Empire (1870 - 1918)
-> What's wrong with plain "German Empire"?

Alternatively, HRE can get cut, but then theres no distinction to the first category... so I wanted to include both.
-> Is silly, you do not need Modern Era in there, imo.
Well, maybe, but there are two categories on the early modern age, and well, I wanted to show that.
-> What about the Northern German Confederation? How about "From Napoleon to Sedan"? :p
Too poetic, so doesnt fit with the rest. OTOH, "Napoleonic Germany, German Cofnederation, North German Cofnederation" is maybe a bit long.

Of course, we could go with "Altreich/Erstes Reich", "Kaiserreich/Zweites Reich", and "Hitlerreich/Drittes Reich", but then we'd have to force everyone to understand/speak German.

Huh, as winner (well, most likely, it's not official yet), I'm in a bit of a pickle, as the two things I would have asked for (a copy of Spore and a cheap Ipod) have already been given to me for my birthay... You can't go wrong with Amazon gift cards, IMO, though.

Hmm...that's not a bad idea, and that also avoids all the prickly issues with asking a 13-year-old for his address &c.

Oy! I'm 14 for your information! And you wouldn't need my address at all, because you would have ended up sending the prize to the American Embassy in Montevideo, that's how we get our mail.
EDIT: And yes, an Amazon card would by cool. You can decide upon the value.

I was going to suggest amazon gift cards as well, but I wasn't sure if you wanted to give away things you had on hand or invest money in the prizes.

I wouldn't mind me a spiffy copy of Spore (assuming I place in the top three), but a gift card would be cool to me as well.

I stuck my head into this section for the first time in quite awhile, and saw this (again). I think it's been a great idea, Burton, and I give a hearty congratulations to all those bored teens who went and did this.
If anyone is interested in a sequel quest for the advancement for the good of AH.com, I have an idea that should be very manageable. I personally can't give any sort of real prize, having no real means to deliver gift-cards/gifts abroad, but hear me out.
If anyone is interested, how about creating a library of all the works in the Writers Forum and completed Time Lines, organized by author and with indication as to whether it is finished or not? Maybe even a "last updated" notation?
While some authors/series, like Chris, the AH.com series, and the Superpower Empire series, while those have their own archives, other authors don't. Doctor What is another of our great writers, but it can be hard to find, or even learn of, his numerous smaller works. Fell has the "Dial M for Elastic" comedy, but because of his job he rarely gets to work on it and so it tends to be back a few pages.
While yes, you could search every board member on wiki and see their list of stories, that method is (a) time consuming and (b) prone to failure if not all their works are listed.
Any thoughts?

That's not a bad idea. Maybe some pages, perhaps in the Timelines section(?) with titles like "Science fiction works by AH.commers", "Comedies by AH.commers" etc? Otherwise it could get a bit unwieldy if it was all one page.

You could put a suggested genre with the story title so that people could search by genre with ctrl-f, but otherwise it's even more unweildy.

We've made a good start on the timelines page. If someone wants to make a timeline page ordered by author it shouldn't be very hard.

I think a separate page would make more sense. I had an idea for an author index page. Something like that could work. Many people have their writings listed on a works pages or on their profile, collected those would be a good start.
