Why can't I indent

Am I missing something here? When I write things in Word and then copy and paste the indentation of my paragraphs always seem to disappear. I know this is a small problem, being purely estetic, but the way it looks with out indents makes my work look sloppy, like I am ignoring one of the rules they pounded into my head in Elementarty School student.
What should I do? I can’t just add tabs using the button labeled “tab.” When I try and add the spaces in by my self, it not only wears down my space bar but it also does nothing to the text. I tried attaching the file and was told I wasn’t using the right format or something like that.
I am puzzled. Does anybody have some advice for me? I want to show people my work, but I also want it to look nice and professional and all that jazz? Is this just a lost cause? Does God hate me? Don’t be shy, tell me what I should do, you’ll make one nerd very happy.

I knew it! While the fact that God truely hates me is somewhat comforting, I still don't have an answer to my problem. But I appreciate your assistance.

Do you mean you put pre-formatted text into code tags ?

Or use it to make spaces stay there like

or that the use of the code tags alone simply indents the specific
piece of text
