An interesting Star Trek TL from 1992. The downside is that it doesnt include info about the Eugenics Wars and since it was 4 years before ST First Contact it has WW3 in 2005.

There are two reasons that people adopt a foreign language as their own.
One is by force as it was done to the vast majority of native americans
(spanish is the language in question). That, however would contradict
the prime directive. The other reason I find is more
common to the U.S.. That is some people want to forget where they come
from and do not teach their native language to their children (the melting
pot). In the Federation there is bound to be strong emigrations across
their planets for whatever reasons (Wouldn't you like to live in Raisa?).
You and I and the ST:TNG writers believe that a people's native culture
and customs should in general not be tampered with.
Thus, I tend to agree with you A UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE ACROSS VASTLY
DIFFERENT CULTURES will rank at best a SECOND LANGUAGE. However, in an
organization like Starfleet I would find it very unlikely that any other
language other than the official language be allowed at any times. You
do not run a succesfull operation by allowing it (I know by firsthand exp.).

The ONU leaves New York City and establishes Headquarters in France.

Shanghai, Colorado, Po and literally thousands of rivers worldwide.

U.N. to modify the Clean Water Resolution and establish the Clean Water
Research Consortium in Saudi Arabia. The results (1997) are an energy-hog
invention called The MOSELMAN (very crude but effective Molecular
Separator).
1996 Mounting pressure on the US government (and the fact that it was a
reelection year) finally forces China off a favorable comercial treaty.
The world is astounded by the event but Japan and the E.C. soon follow
suit. China had a long record of Genocide but very important changes
where about to take place and politicians worldwide expected China to
change soon thereafter, but the people had had enough.
1997 The first MOSELMAN comes on-line and soon thereafter every hydroelectric
dam is equipped with them as they are simple to construct. The energy
requirements, however, take their toll and the U.S. is forced to increase

Uranium based Nuclear stations and in this year alone borrows heavily
increasing it's deficit from 10 trillion (1997 dollars) to more than
40 trillion dollars. The U.S. is forced to cut off all foreign aid.
The U.S. is promptly kicked out of the NATO alliance.
1998 The Japanese efforts of producing efficient H-Fusion reactions succeed
(funding for similar US research efforts had been drastically reduced
many years before). The US in order to save their economy allow huge
concessions to the Japanese. One of the results is that the U.S. loses
their U.N. security council seat to the Japanese.
1999 The U.S. nation is suddenly scorned by the rest of the world. U.S.
passports are no longer a coveted item. Nations that where once friendly
to the U.S. now harrass U.S. tourists in their countries. The rich of the
U.S. rediscover their old heritage and flee with their assets. McDonald's
Hamburgers Franchise spends millions of dollars on a campaign establishing
McDonalds as a 100% Irish enterprise.
2000 The U.S. people vote on a drastic resolution establishing complete
government control of all aspects of their lives. The U.S. capacity
to change is beautifully demonstrated as the U.S. emerges as a strong
socialist nation. The U.S. refuses to pay back any of their loans and
appropriates all foreign assets. The U.S. takes over Cuba over a fierce
debate over Guantanamo base. Sadam Hussein (yes he was still in power)
smiles. The U.N. starts taking strong resolutions agains the U.S.. Not
that the U.S. cares anyway; they have always known they where better than
the outside world.
2001 The U.S. negotiates a free trade agreement with China. The U.S. will
help China develop it's agricultural resources and China in turn will
teach the U.S. people how to live under a socialist regime. Chinese
people are easily taken in by the U.S. as most of U.S. university
faculty by this time was already chinese. This proves to the U.S.
advantage as China effectively blocks ONU resolutions against the U.S..
2002 H-Fusion reactors in the U.S. are complete. The U.S. had rushed in their
construction as their coal supplies and oil supplies did not nearly
meet all their production needs.
2003 The ONU decides to kick China out of the Security Council. The chinese
takes this extremely personally and Maoist guerrillas worldwide stand
up and execute heads of state in various parts of the world. Most notable
are the Colombia massacre and the Hong Kong Genocide.
2004 Tensions accross the world mounts. Hardline communists and a resurgence
of socialism accross Eastern European Nations force those governments to
ship their thermo-nuclear weapons to more stable Western European Nations.
2005 The ONU attempts to enforce a blockade of perishable goods into the U.S.
from China. A Russian submarine fleet is sunk in the pacific by U.S.
forces. The U.S. calls this a preemptive strike. The E.C. declares war
on the U.S.. A preemptive nuclear strike by the E.C. is initiated. Russia
begs to become the first missile launcher. Russian socialist extremists,
however, manage to switch programming codes to the Russian missiles (This
change was never caught, apparently, because the E.C. was previously
divided and those programs where routinely handled and classified together
with the U.S. programs). Europe was rendered inhabitable for many years
after that. The U.S. launched it's missiles and regretably committed the
largest massacre of human beings in all of their history. 2.5 billion
people died that year.
2006 The U.S. and China, unscathed, together with what could only be described
as scattered tribes are all that's left (sorry Canadian cities, especially
Quebec, got the worst), but now the true Federation will emerge.
2007 The Chinese Intelligent Elite which almost all had received their higher
education under democratic ideology become very powerfull politically
as they are the only ones that can clean up the mess. They slowly, but
surely, manage to enact a New World Order Constitution (the ideological
foundation of our Federation). Although, they themselves prefer to
speak in their native tongues, they recognize that not even Mandarin is
recognized as a first language by all chinese. Thus, they adopt English
as the official language simply because it made interaction in a scientific
environment easier.
2008 For the next century, The CIE scientific projects help clean the world at
an incredible rate. The H-Fusion reactors proved to be incredibly helpful.
The MOSELMAN gave way to the MOSIAF filters (Molecular Separator using
Inter-Atomic Forces). Cuban geneticists where the first to come up with
the successfull manufacture of non-sentient clones and the world's
bio-diversity was reestablished (Half of the worlds population worked
exclusively on this project.
2100 Earth was peaceful and under control man now turned up to space.

under the control of man. Containment of anti-gravity for an unprecedented
period of time (10 days) was a major achievement. The first lunar

2110 Two thousand planets are now under the direct and constant observation
of the observatory, scientist make sure, however, that the public
understands that the images are of planets millions of years old.
2111 The JL1 incident. An Unfortunate-Fortunate accident happens on a
particle accelerator in Jupiter's man-made Satellite Laboratory.
As a result of the investigation into the incident, mankind has
definite proof of a new force that can convey information faster than
the speed of light.
2112 Richard Hao (famous physicist) dies of a heart attack after discovering
that all forms of energy interact with the JL1 force. This creates an
inmense surge of activity as the number of fundamental forces -that was
previously thought to be four in the 20th century and unified to the
elusive Grand Unified Theory not fifty years before (2069)- now increased
the number of fundamental forces up to two.

first recordings of a non-periodic signal using devices that measure
the JL1 force. The source of the signal is identified as coming from
Raisa (so sue me I couldn't think of a better first contact).
2120 on (Oh you can take it from, here, I have given you the necessary pieces
of the puzzle to tie down our current events with the Federation, but as
you saw in my previous example, there is no way to continue this without
really asking the ST authors who their first choice is.
