How could a big time fully "made" actual Mafia member become President of the US, plausibly? or why couldn't they?

How could a big time fully "made" actual Mafia member become President of the US, plausibly? or why couldn't they?

The Kennedies? Joe P was deep into organized crime in the 1930s being a rum-runner and bootlegger and his links never entirely went away. Then there was the link between JFK and Sam Giancana to consider.

The big problem is that to bet to be a Mob big-shot one has to do some jail time. I think that disqualifies most candidates.
